Re: car running rich
WHy The hell would you not want your car to run rich? it's much better when Runnig rich, all that really means is that it's getting alot of oxygen and it's breathing well which will increas your top end power, and that's what you want. But if you don't want it to run rich, then you have to adjust your timing...

Re: car running rich
I beg to differ....
My RS is running really rich, Ive changed everything, had sensors checked and replaced, compression checks, Computer diags, no codes. Mazda had it 2 weeks and cant figure it out. If you run rich, you get black smoke. It causes your exhaust to become clogged over time ( like years though), you get 2 much gas not enough oxygen, and misfire, erratic idle, and loss of power. Rich = 2 much gas not enough oxygen, not the other way around.
[ May 30, 2002: Message edited by: Custommx3 ]

You should check the condition of the spark plug. The gap is critical for burning all the fuel. It should be 1mm or .040". A larger gap will make it run rich. check ignition timing and it would'nt be bad to run a fuel cleaner also.

It also ruins you're catalytic converter causing you to fail emissions.

Re: car running rich
I personally have changed plugs, had them gapped, change all the filters, run 87, 89, and 93 octane, same problems, had the timing belt changed and timing set as well. I have had a motor vac run on my car to clean the injectors (which were taken out and cleaned by mazda as well) and inside the motor for carbon buildups. I also run fuel injector cleaner through my car regularly. Believe me I have tried everything but a rebuild.

Well I asked the mechanic where i worked at and he mention that a coolant sensor gives input to your ecu and well as the a/f meter combined to give you the best air/fuel ratio. Our coolant sensor has to be tested at 68F Degrees.I have the resistance table if anyone needs it.
Re: car running rich
Have you checked the intake manifold, and all the pipe leading to the engine? Is the MAF ok? If those are ok, I'd probably get the ECU checked.
good luck
tk1138
