I was wondering if you save taxes buying a car private insted of from a dealer?

I think it all depends on what your car is worth, how much you paid for it, and how you got it (lease, payments, own, etc.)<P>------------------<BR>~'94 GS

hi greg<BR>i live in toronto. if you purchase your car from a dealer ( new or used ), you will have to pay PST and GST. if you buy from a private sale you will only have to pay the PST.<BR>years ago you could submit a hand written reciept and the amount of tax you would have to pay was based on that total, now the govt uses a book value for the year and make of the car. you pay the tax on the book estimate, no matter what condition the car is in !! the only way around this is to get a written apprasial.....and thats going to cost you at least $100.

If you are buddies with the guy(gal) you buy the car from, you can ask them to put a smaller price tag on the receipt so you don't have to pay as much tax. Just don't tell them I told you to do it! Tee Hee!
