bpt in a gs write up.

Post by mazdachad »

I wanted all the features of the gs but still was leaning towards the bpt over the klze. There is no costumazation needed because thankfully we have a 4cyl version of our car. Ill just for now try to remember everything and hopefully keep updating this.

list.
-Bpt engine
-pro lx tranny
-pro lx axles and halfshaft
-clutch. (temporarily im using the awd flywheel and clutch because the one i got was in decent shape)
-4cyl radiator and fans because the v6 radiator input and output are reversed.
-intercooler(temporarly using the stock gtx)
-mounts and crossmember from a pro lx. (i actually have them mixed and matched ive got side sohc mounts and the mounts that touch the tranny are pro lx. Actually the front tranny mount on the awd tranny was the same so i used that because it was in better shape.
-Im using a protege crossmember due to the lack of mx3s in the junkyard near me.
-Shift linkage has to come from a 4cyl also i just used a protege. you do not need to change the tranny bar that runs parallel with it.
-power stearing lines are different so grab those from a 4cyl
-The wiring is going to be different depending on how you approach it. First get the alt, dist, battery cable and the fuse box connected to it and swap that.
-for the main engine harness i went the cheaper pro lx harness. to use this with the bpt ecu i had to swap over the fuel rail wiring harness get a 1 wire o2 sensor and i had to swap to the 3 wire tps throttle body from a manual pro lx. You can run the extra wire to run the 4 wire tps throttle body that came on your bpt or from an auto pro lx which is what im going to do in the near future.
-Also if you go this wiring route with the na fuel rail harness ull have to plugs on the passenger side. The brown one is the vics which you will not be using since the bpt doesnt have it. The white is for the fuel pressure regulator and you will have to lengthen this to reach the driver side of the engine since that is where it is located on the bpt.
-upgraded fuel pump.
-for the slave cylinder the one i got off the pro lx didnt mount right for some reason but i was able to bend the metal piping with my hands so i used the line and slave cylinder that came on the k8.
-Youll need some vacuum hoses because one needs to be extended quite a bit to the passanger side of the intake manifold.
-the v6 throttle cable i had seemed to be a bit to long so you just disconnect it from the pedal and swap it for a pro lx and it works fine now.
-the coolant take will need to be dropped lower in the fender because that is where the intake will now sit.
-Im using a maf from a pro lx but a second gen rx7 is preffered and tuneable
-for the ac i just used the v6 since it mounted up fine to the bpt
-radiator hoses from a pro lx
-since your gs speedomoter is electronic and your pro lx tranny is not the best way to get around this is swap your cluster for a 4cyl and use the speedo cable that comes with is.
-custom downpipe and exhaust
-this is all i can think of for now ill update when i think of more.
now for some pics.

a little further down the line

the vacuum line that needs to be extended to the other side of the intake manifold.

The brown wire is for vics which is not used if you have a bpt. the white needs to be extended behind the engine to the fpr near the distributor

ill work on better quality and more recent and detailed pics in the future.
hope this helps some people. Just wanted to show that gs people have another option. Yes it can be a pain gathering all the parts but atleast nothing has to be fabricated. feel free to ask any questions im sure i left some things out.

Reviving a dead thread but.....

I see you left the cruise in there did it work with the bpt, also did the ac function in the end (were the pullies of very similar sizes)?

I am going to be doing this swap between my already bpt'd 323 and a MINT (not a spec of rear wheel well rust!) green loaded 96 gs I'm getting for $1200, with the intention of swapping both power trains, suspensions and front brakes (mostly for the new wheel bearings I have in them and yes they are mx3 fronts on the 323). :welder:

Lots of work eh?

So to answer any questions there might be about the compatibility of the k series engines and the 323, they fit the same as in an mx3 (I've seen it with my own eyes)

i havent gotten the cruise control to work

the v6 ac bolted up and belts are fine but i have not gotten the ac charged but im almost positive itll work it turns on.

for the v6 in the 323 theres a good write up on clubprotege. it seems like the major issue is finding a radiator that will fit. If your taking parts from the 323 you'll have no problems mine was just difficult because i didnt have a donor car and had to source parts individually

the only thing i can think of is the wiring harness not hooking up under the dash with the v6 because i do not know if the wiring there is different since yours is a 96. worst case scenario is megasquirt

I was considering doing this swap after i wrecked my GTX, but the AWD system woulda been the b---- to install. Seems like the motor is straight forward install with the protege parts.

Have you thought about installing a BP with a V6 swap?
