Custom Shifter Bushings.

Post by posey92 »

So all the play in mybstick is driving me nuts...and from what I hear you can only get certain ones but not all of them...so my plan this week is to detach and drop the entire shifter linkage...fill the entire area where the bolts and such goes with the poly stuff we fill engine mounts with drill put the center large enough to hole a metal sleeve lube it up and put everything bak togeter...any thoughts on this...i yadnt even considered the metal sleeve idea at first...I was just going to lube up the hole and put the stuff eight thru...

You can't do what your proposing, there's nothing to fill. There are aftermarket bushings you can buy, I bought the stock plastic ones from the Dealer and they worked ok. You may find the front bolt a bit of a biotch to remove so use a lot of penatrating oil before you start then have a C clamp ready to help you press the bolt out. Suggest you visit the Dealer and buy new bolts before you start as well. Your never going to get the shifter stiff unless maybe you use that new Viagra bushing lubricant.

the OEM ones are suitable for a good 10 years. Why don't you just pick some up at the dealer?

Well onw thing I noticed is that the bolt attatching the linkage to the bottom of the shifter even when tightened I can move it side to side bout half an inch...is that normal...can I put some washers in there to fill the gap.

With new bolts and bushings the play should be reduced. There is a post here where people used a threaded bolt (not factory) and cranked the clevis together to take up the slack but that induces stress on the clevis and it could crack. If you can shim the clevis with lets say some washers it would probably help. Just remember when you try to remove the bolts expect them to be seized so like I said use a C clamp to press the bolt out.

Well I dont think there is a bushing in there period. By clevits or whatever your talking aboug the bottom of the shifter with the hole and the end of the shift linkage that goes around that with the bolt passing thru holding them together...if so yea I can push the bolt back and forth by hand loosely with that hlf inch or play/gap I had mentiond. Ill try and take a pic tonight.

Corksport Bronzeoil bushings - did it on 2 of my 3 SE's and loved it. Daughter is driving one now with those bushings in it...night and day.

Its not hard. Good idea to buy a pair of bolts and nuts. then just dremel the old ones out and save time.
