Crank won't turn by hand

Post by Cornelius »

Put a socket on the crank of a motor I am trying to retime. The camshafts are lined up, so I tried to turn the crank. It turns maybe half a turn clockwise and locks up. I tried to back it off a little and it freezes up at maybe a half turn the other way.

I have read that the klde is an interference motor, and I have also read that it is NOT just depending on which link I click. Does anyone know for sure if it is or is not an interference engine?

Any reason it's locking up that isn't terrible news?

Yes probably just compression preventing you from turning it.

It will have a lot more resistance too when the cams are all connected by belt. The HLA's take quite a bit of force from the camshafts to push down. Plus if you have spark plugs in it will make things harder.

Have you rebuilt the engine? I hope you have not taken the HLAs apart and filled them up with oil, because you definitely won't be able turn the engine like that.

Be careful when your trying to spin it past compression, thats knuckle busting territory when it rolls.
