Arthur's 1983 vw rabbit gl build

Post by racycle »

Hello everyone, my name is Arthur. This is my second car , after wanting a vw for awhile I went out and found this for $300. This also is my first vw.

Picked this car up yesterday. Only rust I have found is on the back hatch. Currently the motor is locked up from a previous driver not watching the oil. So a rebuild will probably happen.

--where it sat when I bought it--
Image

--back seats and broken stuff removed--
Image

--redoing the headliner--

Image

--Stock cd player was gone when I got it , along with the wiring harness and some of the wires.--
I will be using a jvc multi color headunit , with 4x 5.25" fusion speakers , 4x fusion 1.25" tweeters
, 4x fusion crossovers, and currently a 1000watt sony amp with a single 1200watt pyle 12" sub from my old mx-3.
Image

To finish off my first post, the last owner installed 4inch pioneer speakers into the doors so I will be using the same spots with some trimming to avoid having to replace the door panels.
Image

Started tearing down the motor didn't get far but yea , pretty clean.

Image

I went to blow the dust out of the old speaker spots, and the fabric crumbled , so i replaced them.

Image

Got the door speakers in and flush. Was surprised they cleared the window.
Image

Trunk carpet sprayed black. the cab carpet is waiting on paint.
Image

Gave myself some music while i messed around
Image

Started to wrap the trunk door cover thing, i don't know the real term for it lol.
Image
Image

more work on the trunk. I removed the old speaker mounts and found they were both broken.

Image

Redid the pillers , the old fabric just fell off.

Image

Image

the loose fabric on the sides is just sitting there so i could cover the aweful speaker mounts :P

Was to windy and cold to do any work in the bay, so I hurdled up inside the car and got the interior mostly finished other than the trunk , missing plastic parts.

Got the carpet cleaned , dried, and black

back into the car
Image

While most of the under dash was out , i wired up my crossovers and hid them. Hard to see but one of them is in the pic
Image

door handles , and little handle cover things black
Image

Got to dark to take a pic of the interior so maybe tomorrow :P

Dye would have been cheaper but I didn't feel like messing with it. A small bottle in some water goes a long way though. I used 2.5 cans of vinyl and fabric paint. Some friends that use it take a knuckle brush to it afterwards to soften it back up but I prefer it a little stiff(seams easier to clean).

A guy in my town has one of those. He rides on fat low profile tires and has upgraded interior like Scriocco seats. The car looks pretty sweet so much so I pulled into a lot he was parked in and talked with him for 1/2 an hour or so. Good Luck with the project.

Engine out , front grill , emblem and bolts painted and put back on.

Image

Finished up the last of the flares.

Image

Friend stopped by and wanted to help , so he got this nice and clean. along with a few other task done.

Image

The answer to all my problems, It is stuck in there pretty hard. I can't turn the shaft due to the piston and I also cant remove the shaft due to the flywheel which I half to be able to turn to get to all the bolts...

The block is finally free, however piston 3's bearings melts to the shaft and rod.. Did get some cosmetics done though.

Spent most of the day cleaning the bay , didn't actually take a pic of my progress but ohwells

Image

finally wrapped the other speaker housing for the trunk so the trunk is almost done , just got to figure out how to mount the center cover thing.

Image

Got another block (1.8 gti, old one was 1.7) not sure what kind of issues I will run into from this though. The 1.7's 3rd piston bearings had melted to the shaft and rod. So here is where the 1.8 will be until it is ready for reassembly.
