Looking for tuner shop

Post by tbondo »

I was wondering if any of our members know of a quality tuner shop in the Minneapolis/St. Paul MN are that has experience with our MX-3's with the 2.5 swap. I have exhausted all avenues trying to find my issues after completing my swap. I currently have the car for sale, but that doesn't seem to be getting any interest in my area. If I can't find someone that can find my issues, my only next step would be pulling the motor and parting out the car. Let me know if anyone knows of a place that may be able to help. Thanks

I'm confident that this forum can give you more information then any tuner shop in MN, I don't think there are any MX3 familiar shops there as there is a guy somewhere on this forum who said so.

I don't have a "worklog" but I have done some posting in the past. Below is the latest one.

http://www.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=79716

To explain, the issues I am experiencing are a hesitation under open non grampa driving throttle, a rough idle, and a lean condition. Please note I have no CEL's.

My current setup is:
94 originally RS MX-3
93 probe GTS ECU - unknown model as the label is worn off
KL02 mass air sensor
92 MX-3 GS distributor
motor came from a 97 probe GT

Things I have tried based on tips from the forum and past topic postes are:
Set the TPS - TPS is adjusted and has been swapped with others
Check for intake tube leaks - entire intake tube has been swapped and securely sealed with new silicone couplings and clamps. During this change a different mass air sensor was used. No change
Check for vacuum leaks - I have went through my vacuum system with no findings
Check the O2 sensors - O2 sensors have been replaced with brand new ones
Check intake manifold for leaks - upon initial swap completion we sprayed starting fluid around the intake trying to find solution for crappy idle
Adjust the timing - timing has been set multiple times
Adjust idle screw - screw has been adjusted in and out to both extremes with little change. After testing returned it to 3 turns out as noted from forum as roughly stock location
Check IAC system - I have removed and cleaned the IAC system. I have also swapped the entire throttle body system with a different one with no change.

The engine has a fresh rebuild with less than 100 miles on it. My suspicions now are ignition system (distributor or wires), bad ECU, or the engine rebuilder screwed something up internally during reassembly.

It's sad to admit, but I have been chasing these issues for roughly 2 summers now and have pretty much run out of money and patience. I really don't have the money to just "try" different parts. That is why I am looking for an experienced shop or person to diagnose where my issues are coming from so I can get them fixed without wasting money.
Thanks for the help.

Your set up seems fine, KL02, Disty and ECU. Of course the 072 is a little newer than a 071, 92 disty. When you screw down the idle screw the engine should stall, if it keeps running there's a problem. Have you checked your FPR to make sure it's connected properly, you could try disconnecting the vac line and see how it runs under WOT.

Should I be messing with the idle screw and fpr in diagnostic mode or normal running? Previous idle screw adjustments I did was in diagnostic mode. Im pretty sure the fpr is connected right but I have not tried disconnecting the vacuum. Maybe try that tomorrow.

Have you checked your cooling system? Knock sensor? What octane fuel are you running? Try another Ecu, as a bad one may never throw cel codes.

I finally got fed up and ran out of money so I ended up selling my car. I do know the buyer tried a new disty and it solved nothing. Haven't heard back to find out if he found the issues.

Wimp. Is that your solution to all your life's problems? Pass them along or just out and out walk away from them. You need to face life's problems head on. Take affirmative action and see things through to the end. You can't keep running your whole life. Umm, how much did you get for the car,

Youre a real big talker over the internet. Considering I spent 2 years trying to track down the issues I feel I spent plenty of my time and money. Didn't run away just decided it was time to move on to something bigger and better.

Thats just dans humor on the board no need to take offence. I know its a lil too late but Ive seen some strange things with the coolant sensors causing this same situation on PT, and im sure if it was major your motor would have died long before the 2yr mark sad you sold it.

I talked to the new owner and it urned out it was the knock sensor. Not sure how he found it as it wasnt throwing any cel codes but I know it went to a new enthusiastic owner.
