New KLG4 swapped 323.. Track times for the end of 2012

Post by crazycanadian »

Took the car out to the track tonight... Wasn't what I was hopping for but then again I have lot of room for improvement.. The car is pretty stock... just has headers, intake, light flywheel.. u/d pulley.. i still need to go over everything in the car.. since I bought it I have been finding little things wrong with the swap... I still have to fix all the egr stuff.. its missing the egr vacume control soleniod... plus I might have knocked the vacume lines off the vacume canister when I was installing my power steering thurs night..

First run of the night.. I still had my 17's pumped up to 42psi... bad wheel spin off the line..

R/T.... 0.442
60'..... 2.398
330'... 4.819
1/8.....10.192
MPH....69.76
1000...13.276
1/4.... 15.887
MPH....85.72

Second and last run of the night for me... I dropped my tire pressure down to about 20psi.. Still couldn't launch worth a bag of crap..

R/T.... 0.577
60'..... 2.307
330'....6.099
1/8.....10.034
MPH....69.53
1000'...13.091
1/4......15.690
MPH.....85.47

Next time out I plan to take my other set of rims and tires... Even though they are old the Toyo RA1's on the 14's rims will perform better then the federalls I have on my 17's...

Keep us posted. Wheelspin killed my times, and I can't seem to calm down, and ease into it. On my best run, I spun the wheels for 2 seconds. If I could cut the spin time in half, I would be in the 13's.

A little off topic but when I street dragged years ago we'd sneak up on the back of the guys car and have one of our girls go out front to distract the guy then we'd piss on his tires to destroy his launch.

Small rims will help you out, but your trap does seem low for a DE swapped 323 with those mods. Are you at high elevation?

Nope the track is actually a little below sea level... The trap speed really bothers me as well... I know the car feels flat.. feels like something is holding it back..

Are your VRIS working properly? Try using zip ties to hold them open and see if your trap goes up. Might feel a little sluggish down low but it should make up for it on top.

I have checked them by reving the motor in neutral and watching.. both open an close... I checked the vacume valve, that is good.. Also when I used my vacume pump to check for leaks in system it was ok.. I'll still try that though if I can make it to the track again this year...

I took the car back out to the track tonight to run the 1/4 mile... What a great night it was... I believe under 100 drivers showed up tonight... Gates opened at 4:30, I rolled in at 6:00 and was car 39... I guess the threat of rain was enough to keep a lot of people from coming out... In 2 and a half hours I got 6 runs with the opportunity to have 9... I skipped 3 different rounds to try and cool the car off a little and eat some dinner....

Best run of the night on my 14" Toyo RA1's aired down to 12psi... 2nd gear burn outs

R/T .... 0.661
60' .... 2.170
330 .... 6.287
1/8 .... 9.713
MPH .... 72.24
1000.... 12.250
1/4 .... 15.250
MPH .... 88.73

I have really noticed and odd VTEC like feeling with my car from time to time... Some times it pulls really hard other time its a dead horse.. My first run was really odd.. It felt like the car was running out of breath at 6000rpm in 2nd gear, I ran it out to 6300 and shifted... When I hit 3rd gear the car pulled the same till about 55000rpm and then I got a bump in power and the car opened up and pulled strong till 7000rpm... I only ran 86.63MPH that run but I found it really odd how the car just all the sudden wanted to pull harder... I decided to strap my VRIS flaps open for the rest of the night... I didn't get that sensation in extra power and it didn't really help my MPH much... The only gain for my MPH was my shift timing... I went from shifting at 6500rpm down to 5800- 6000rpm... That was when my MPH picked up..

With the clouds coming in and an mustang that tapped the wall I didn't think I was going to get a 6th run so I swapped out my tires and started to get ready to head home... Thankfully I was wrong and managed to get 1 in before the rain shut the night down.. I ran the last run with my 17's on the car...

This just goes to show how important a good 60' is...

With the 17's at 40psi, no burnt out

R/T .... 0.585
60' .... 2.420
330 .... 6.639
1/8 .... 10.097
MPH .... 71.15
1000 .... 13.101
1/4 .... 15.640
MPH .... 88.35

Have you done a full compression test of your engine? Those times are just too slow. A stock de with just a intake in a 96 ls mx6 body full interior can run 15.2-15.3s all day no joke. Being in a light shell like the 323s I was assuming you'd be in the mid to high 14s at the slowest. What are your shift points and your launches set at?

Might as well bring this back from the dead.. With building a new exhaust system last month my car felt a little better.. Topped end seems to pull a little harder... Last year the car felt like it had a hard time pulling to 6800rpm... After the new exhaust system it feels good up to 7K...

Last year I was running 205/55/14" toyo RA1's for tires... This year I ran 225/50/14" Kumo V710's... Same set of rims for both sets of tires.. They are all autocross slicks, but thats what I have and its better then street tires... The car weighed in at 2260lbs on the scales at the start of the night with no driver...

Tonights best run...
R/T .... 0.537
60' .... 2.118
330 .... 6.189
1/8 .... 9.644
MPH .... 71.49
1000.... 12.679
1/4 .... 15.266
MPH .... 86.58

Tonight I was letting the car run out to 7K before shifting.. From looking back at this thread I should have tried short shifting sooner... My MPH is still really slow.. I suspect if I do a compression test I'll find the motor is getting tired... The last half of the night ended up being a lot of fun... I met up a guy who has a KLDE swapped protege5 out racing... We lined up for our last 3 runs and had our selves a little grudge match.. It seemed to really help him pick up his times... I won 2 out of the 3 runs.. In his fastest run of the day I spun hard off the line running my worst time of the night.. He blew the doors off me that run...

KLDE swapped Protege5 fastest time slip
R/T .... 0.183
60' .... 2.356
330 .... 6.509
1/8 .... 9.902
MPH .... 73.54
1000.... 12.848
1/4 .... 15.323
MPH .... 90.78

The protege was on street tires.. His motor was set up pretty much the same as mine.. headers/exhaust/intake thats it... His MPH really confirms that I am down on power...

Tonights excitement.. :)
NEW BEST TIME 1/4mile time.. :) Tonight was the last night for drag racing for the season... On my final run I nailed the launch and got my best 60' time to date with the car...

RT .416
60' - 2.033
330 - 5.928
1/8 - 9.215
MPH - 74.96
1000 - 12.045
1/4 - 14.468
MPH - 91.29

This is the cars set up now... Stock KLG4 swap, headers, intake 2.5" exhaust, fidanza flywheel. Transmission has complete escort gear set with KAAZ LSD..
Tires were 225/50 R14 Kumo V710's.. Didn't know what they were aired down to since I lost my tire pressure gauge..

The car feels like a KL swapped 323 should feel like now... I am pretty sure if I was still running the stock 4.38 diff ratio I would have been quicker... But this car isn't built for drag racing.. I am really happy how it performed.. Next year I'll probably tinker and play with it a little bit... I might be able to squeeze a couple more tenths out of the car...

I had my little helper out at the track tonight... He was really excited to be out watching his Dad run and more then excited to help me change tires at the end of the night... The jack won the battle though... Little man just doesn't have enough weight yet to jack up the car... :) It was quiet the sight watching him try though.. My gf and I both had a good laugh...

This is part of my fastest run she cut it off by the time I got around the 1/8.. I'll have to teach my gf over the winter how to better use the camera... The Mercedes ran a 12.490.. so no I didn't beat him.. :(
