Airbag clock spring in non-airbag mx3

Post by Willen »

Does anyone know whether or not this airbag clockspring and arms unit from the newer mx3's will be a straight fit into my 93 model?

I know I have to replace both of the arms as well, but I'm merely asking whether or not it will fit in terms of usability, plugs, wires and whatnot to make everything still work?

I have a Mazda 6 steering wheels complete with the controls and the clock spring that came with it, but the controls won't do me any good until I get that clock spring in there and I was kinda hoping that I could replace the mx3 one with the one from the 6.

Anyways, can I put the 94+ bits into a 91-93 one and still have everything work as it should?

I would say yes, but you will need to disconnect the large plug first as that is the airbag connector. The other small plug is for the horn, but that wont work anyways with the M6 wheel.

The steering shaft where the wheel goes on is the same between all mx3, the splines are identical. The stalks should also work, but my only concern is if they will fit in the 93 steering column cover.. the airbag cover is much different, and longer. Not sure if the stalks will fit but you can try

If the unit does not work, I know someone that will buy this whole assembly..

I definitely want to give this a try! I already replaced my 93 dash with the one from a 95 so having enough room in there shouldn't be much of a problem. The 6 steering wheel itself is already in my mx and I managed to fit it in there without a lot of trouble. Getting the horn to work was a little tricky, but I did find the solution in the end.

My only real concerns are whether or not I can get this baby to sit there and don't move and whether or not the plugs for the wipers, lights and indicators will fit as well...
