I Interprep'd the DE heads. Just a heads up, but it took me ~10min/valve... so unless you have a really good technique, set aside a few hours for it.

Only a few snags... forgot the piston installer sleeve dealio, lost track of some of the bolts I cleaned up, so I had to use some dirty ones, the exhaust bolts I bought I had sized for a bottoming tap, which Mazda didn't use... my bad. So I had to trim 14 grade 10.9 bolts with an angle grinder, sheesh they are MUCH stronger than 8.8. Pretty much had to get them molten for them to lose any strength.

Need to clean up the accessory brackets, and buy a few little bits of hose, coolant, some cheap oil... I hope to install it next weekend. I will if you can fit a stock Y pipe against Ebay headers.

It was slow going today, back to cleaning bolts I forgot and the tensioner brackets.

I assembled the clutch without the rear seal. Doh. Only took half an hour to tear down, un-threadlock the bolts, and reassemble.

and I think I have the shortest ever FPR solenoid hosery :D

Surprisingly, I got the timing on the second try! Personal best. I had to make a washer for behind the tensioner pulley, and I think its still a bit too thin and I'm concerned about the belt walking off of it.... I guess I'll find out.

Took a leap and a bound this weekend.

about 20 hours to get it all sorted out... the exhaust was a pain. Running stockish exhaust for now, full exhaust goes on this week I hope.

Image

Got it soldered in for $20 by a local shop. It still throws the EGR codes even though its not supposed to.

Runs beautifully, after my friend's fresh set of eyes found the massive vac leak from the custom intake setup I used on the last motor.

Its a monster already... hardly broken in at all. I'm using the "hard break in" theory this time around, since the "pussy break in" didn't work so hot on my BP.

I blew the motor.

Yeah, tell me about it. Not even 100 km's on the clock.

It was strange, had it up fairly high, a wee bit over 7k, and then I heard it on the way down, a little shudder, and the oil light started to flicker so I killed it. Oil was fine. Start it back up, it idles normal, but at 2.5k it knocks.

Drained the oil, looks like rheomagnetic fluid, but thats fairly normal for a new engine. Popped both valve covers, everything seems in order, but I'll drop the TB and pull the cams tomorrow morning to make sure, before I rip it out and put the damned K8 back in so I can keep going to work (although the GF lent me her car for tomorrow)

It seems loudest on the top on the rear head, which doesn't make a lot of sense. Most KL's blow the #6 rod before anything on that side of the motor. But thats why I'm checking the retainers first. I doubt it though, because it still idles fine, and if it dropped a valve it would not idle fine.

Rod bearing is the most likely culprit, damnit. I hope the crank is okay so I can just replace the bearing and be on my way.

Damnit! So much for a bulletproof combo. Interpreps and DE retainers to save the heads, and balance to save the bottom end.... yeah, bulls---.

Next motor I build will not be built, it will be inserted straight from a JY car, and then boosted.

But anyway, about the motor before it died:

The idle with the 218's was not bad, it could do 700, but it made NO power down there, you have to use a decent amount of throttle to get it moving or it stalls.

Compression was up to 165 across the board, but I really think my gauge is out. I'm going to have to cross check it with a known good one. But it should be a bit lower, since I'm using DE heads and they're a few CC's bigger.

Powerband dropped off at an unfortunate 6.5k rpm. I think thats a combination failure of stock exhaust and milli manifold.

stupid cooling fan wouldn't go off, even once I replaced the green sensor with a known good one. Passed the diagnostic tests though, so maybe it was just running hot all the time.

drank fuel like pig. About twice as much as my K8 did. New motors do burn more fuel though, and I was riding her moderately hard.

Too bad dude..
Not even 100khm!!!
Maybe the cost of repair is lower than buying a new engine and boosting it..

The question is was it the hard break in, or the oil pump design?

I doubt it was the break in. I just think KL engines are pussies.

The heads are, unfortunately, in perfect working order. Out she comes so I can do the bottom end.
