new twist....jeez

Post by Haley »

So I changed my rad hose, stopped the leak....
sprayed the cas connector with contact cleaner.
Tonight on the way home, CEL comes on and car keeps driving...little less power than usual. Made it home but noticed that my clock on the dash wasnt illuminated. Tried to turn my radio on , no go. So now Im thinking alternator.
Argh! this is so frustrating.

Don't "think". Take it to an auto parts store, and have the electrical system diagnosed, before you waste your money on parts that are working.
It can be the battery, the alternator, a loose ground, etc. Remember you're driving an 18 year old car...

Anyway, when the Brushes go a car can keep running until the battery is drained but Ya get your alt checked. From now on have one spare part for every part on your car like we do.

Yes, still getting the cel and car is sluggish while its on. Has a bit of a vibration too. Barely noticeable...but there.
I ordered the cas, process of elimination...if that doesn't fix it, disty next.
I'm at work now so at lunchtime buddy will check with the analyzer to see whats up.

your friend's 'analyzer' is going to be an OBD reader, and it's not going to be able tell you anything.

kind of sounds(?) like you already pulled codes and know how, so why not start there..?

Hmmm...for some reason I assumed she was talking about a battery tester...

Haley: Ninjajim is right. Ask your friend if his analizer is a "computer scanner". If it is, it won't work in your car, as it's meant for cars '96 and up.

He forgot to bring it anyway, he says its for 86 and up.
Either way, today I got the new cas sensor so I will be attempting to replace that tomorrow. I'm sure it'll be a b---- and take me 3 times longer than it should.

Buy a few zip ties. You need to keep that wire away from the belts, and running it up behind the dipstick makes it 10x more complicated than a few well placed zip ties.

Anyway, there's a lot of Canadians in this forum. Just post a pic of yourself, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of volunteers...

This probably sounds silly, but did you attempt to pull the CEL codes manually via the diagnostic box in your engine bay?

The reason I ask is that on one occasion I did this myself and forgot to pull the paperclip back out.... I drive the 1 mile drive home with it in and the car exhibited similar symptoms to what you've mentioned, including the apparent loss of power. I was terribly worried, until I opened the hood and facepalmed over it. I pulled the clip and the car ran smooth as ever.

Just remember, no detail is too small when it comes to diagnostics!! Even if you only think you heard, saw, or felt something wrong... It could be helpful!
