Can I do the HEI mod on my i4 1.6l

Post by xxwhiteboyjim22xx »

Ive got idle issues and it has now started to stall my car. I know its the spark since I have always had idle problems on warm up. Question is do I gotta buy a new disty or can I do the HEI mod. I can only find write-ups for V6 engines. Thanks duuudes!

The ignition is the same, except spark events / revolution. That stumped me for awhile too, but its exactly the same procedure for 4 cyl and v6. You just need to know what pin on the HEI does what, and the figure out your harness, and then do it up.

Quick question. Been doing some research and was wondering what is the point of adding a seprate coil? Im following this guys write-up http://www.clubprotege.com/wil/howto/hei/index.htm .......he gives you the option to go with a external coil or not but it seems like a huge headache if it is still going to work with out it.

It is a lot of extra work, but external coils are cheaper and easier to replace, because they do go bad, and you can actually get a better spark out the them (marginal milage/power gains)

Ok so it looks almost identical to the v6 after looking at my wiring harness. The only thing you confused me on is the spark advance. I looked that up to and it looks like you gotta do the old school gun strobe is that right? Other then this I will throw one in on sunday. Ill do a quick writeup if anyone else ever stumbles across this.

Spark advance is electroinic. You need to set the base timing using a timing light, ECM does the rest regardless of HEI or whatnot.
