BP Swap

Post by NLP303 »

Hey their I just got in my escort gt bp engine into my mx3 and everything worked out pretty good it started right up and I havent had any problems with it. Last night I whent to the races and got smoked by a 96 integra LS and a Pontiac sunfire. I am the only MX3 in my area and I felt a little bad cuz everyone wanted the cool new MX3 to win. I dont know why but the MX3 feels like it takes forever to get to second gear. Once in second its pretty quick in the 6000 rpm and higher range. Its completely stock and my question for you BP guys is is it normal to take off pretty slow and if so what kind of mods are out their other than a turbo setup because I dont have much money.

I really need your help im not trying to go back to the races and put our little mx3s to shame.

Well outside of forced induction and upgrading your suspension ( replacing your bushings and motor mounts ) theres not much to really help these cars in a straight line. If you want to be a lil more succesful youll need to find a track with some corners in it then theyll see the light 8)

But thats just my experience with 3s, and its taken me along time to realize not to rev up on that camaro unless theres a hairpin down the line.

Thanks man But the only track in Colorado is a Drag strip. and the Sunday night street races.. Dont you think my little BP Swap could at least beat a couple of 4cyl. hondas with air intakes and headers?? I mean I have to represent our Mazda power right?? :)

Oh and today I found out that my check engine light never comes on not even with key on engine off, but the charging system indicator is always on and the alternator hasnt failed.
The only wiring work ive done is connecting the black/yellow wire on the escort harness to the black/white wire on the mazda, and the black/blue wire to the yellow wire on the little white connector. Just like Mi/<E did in his worklog.

I'm sort of in the same situation as you. It feels slow in lower RPMs (though I haven't gotten it up to 5k RPM or higher.. most I had it up was 4.5k... and this is due to me baby'ing my newly rebuilt motor). Ryan on here has told me this is normal so I"m just anxiously awaiting the 1k mark on the motor miles so that I can tear into her :) .

I'm not sure of N/A mods for the BP out there other then the ITB's that were posted. Check this out:

viewtopic.php?f=46&t=71605&start=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's mx-3_4evr's n/a build. Well.. a part of it haha.

But yeah The only things I can see to net you more gains are engine upgrades. And those will cost $$s just like a turbo build...

But a good start I'd say would be a standalone ecu system like megasquirt. And then get a good tune with it.

There's actually quite a bit of easy cheap or cheap-ish mods you can do to a bp.

1)Intake
2)exintake
3)coolant bypass mod
4)AFPR
5)intake mani cutmod
6)B code VAF + simple tune

i noticed that with those alone, makes a pretty decent difference.

exp exintake and cutmod and vaf combo

And I might have missed it, but it sounds like you don't have a BP ECM and the VICS system hooked up. You loose a lot of jam without those.

Also, the G series Escort trans will get you a bit quicker.

What the heck is the coolant bypass mod and the intake mani cutmod?

Coolant bypass mod is literally bypassing the cooland lines running through the throttle body. The theory behind it is that the coolant heats the TB, this heats the air passing throughit, the bypass just connects the in and out coolant lines, keeping the TB cooler. The only problem with this is the idle, you don't have coolant warming up the thermal wax in the IAC.

The intake mani cutmod; no damn clue!

bah, that is soo stupid. There is not enough time or surface area in the TB to cause any difference.
