Why would you buy cheaper stuff, if you replace it more often, which makes it not-as-cheapmikeetown wrote:I buy cheap s--- stuff 80w-90 and change it every summer. 5$ a bottle.
changing it more often is better than the best gear oil. I`ve heard all my life that gear oil is gear oil
how about if you finiky,
GEAR OIL lol + lucas oil stabalizer.
Even worse for being cost effective, changing it more often AND adding additive....

Re: What is the best Manual transmission fluid
If I'm buying good gear oil I like Redline MT90
If I'm buying parts store gear oil I usually do a qt of Lucas then a couple quarts of whatever synthetic gear oil has the best pricing.
As for gear oil being gear oil, that's crap. I put in 3 qts of the cheap stuff one day and the tranny shifted all notchy. Swapped it out for some good oil, all the notchiness went away.

there is always a sale at walmart. 3$ for a quart of castrol 75w-90 and i only do it once a year. To me thats plenty enough and I've never had a problem in 5 years. So, since gear oil is gear oil i just dont worry about it. In the past when i used lucas, It helped a heck of a lot in the winter. Thats all i know. Also, synthetic gearl oil, is synthetic gear oil (at 12$ a quart).
Most people i see change it every 50,000 km and ppl who dont know anything never do it..............................

Re: What is the best Manual transmission fluid
I agree with you. But, that notchiness goes away in like 5 mins when i drive in winter.......... so i just never worry about it and my tranny has 330,000 km almost on it.hppwdn wrote:If I'm buying good gear oil I like Redline MT90

Re: What is the best Manual transmission fluid
gear oil should be API GL-4 ONLY, any mention of GL-5 (which is what most gear lubes are) will spell out an early death to your synchronisers. he EP additives make the shifting notchy, and eat soft metals.(yellow metals)
Synchromesh is good stuff, especially in colder climates. Its a 5w30 modified oil with a great additive pack for gear protection. (gear oil and motor oil are rated on different scales. 75w90 gear oil is equivalent to a 10w40 motor oil)
Lucas is junk for suckers who beleive the saturday morning garage TV ads. Royal purple isn't much better.
absolute best lube I ever used was motocraft MTL from the ford dealer. Expensive, but great!
