New Video Card!

Post by mikeinaus »

YAY so i finally bit the bullet and grabbed a radeon 5850 to replace my tired geforce 9500gt. plugged it all in and wham system wont start :crying: . it appears my ancient motherboard doesnt support newer cards. tried my card in my gfs brothers comp and it starts fine, tried his radeon 5770 in mine and still no post.. even thow my board has a pci-e 1.0 slot and 2.0 cards are supposed to be backwards complaint i guess they dont like each other. now i have to find a newer motherboard :crying: . anyways i just wanted to vent and let go of my frustration.

btw anyone seen the previews for that dc universe online game? it looks nuts im going to be putting in my pre-order next paycheck so i can play the beta test :).

I'm just waiting for diablo 3. Seeing as how Ultima Online ruined my mmorpg life. No games compare.
Took the bp+t out of the mx and swapped it into a 95 escort wagon. ;)

If you were really into UO, I do not think Diablo 3 will satisfy your needs.

Shadowbane did for me, but alas, it is no more!

Have you heard of Darkfall Online?

Just 1 of the many examples..

Free 14 day trial, and I've been able to play on my dated 8600 GTS. Will hopefully be picking up a 6950 after Christmas!

5850 is a lot of power for an old MOBO and you will most likely be CPU restricted. What are you running? You can put together a decent AMD build for pretty cheap.

pci-e 1 and 2 don't really refer to types or pci slots rather than the speed their capable of, like usb 1.1 and 2.0.
so it's not that your card isn't compliant with pci-e 1 it's that when it works your pci slot will just limit what your card can do, but pci-e 1 is more than enough speed you'll need or more than our technology uses atm

i also think this is the best solution

bios was updated a few months ago with a hacked one that would support windows 7. the last official bios update from ecs was in 2006 and wouldnt run windows 7. i grabbed a new 2nd hand mobo for $40 today and it booted first try. besides the card working, i now have acces to many ocing features my old crappy motherboard did not support.

i will be cpu limited as i have a pentium d 3.2ghz, but im gonna be overclocking it to 4-4.5ghz (depending on my results). that should last me a few months till i can find a nice ocing 2nd hand core 2 duo/quad in my price range. a 3ghz core 2 duo is about 10% (give or take) slower in games then a core i7, assuming i can find one that does 3.5-4ghz i should be fine for another year or 2 with this setup.

havnt had a chance to play a game yet, been messing with drivers for the last hour getting everything to work properly...

not sure what cpu, psu, or cooling system you got but 4-4.5ghz might be a bit much on a 3.2, it can be done yes, but if not getting stable power or sufficient cooling you'll have lots of problems

Not worth OCing when it can't compete with a $200 setup for Mobo/ram and proc. IMO. Check used on hardforum.com or craigslist/ebay if you don't want to spend the $$ on a new system. Hell, I've got an Athlon X2 6400 sitting around doing nothing give me a PM.

i just ran 3dmark 06 and got a score of 6,800. i7 systems with the same card score around 10,000. im not sure what that 30% difference will add up to for real world games but ill try and play some actual games now. thank you for the offer of the athlon x2 but i dont want to look for another motherboard right now (especially after i bought one today). there is however a core 2 duo e5200 for $40 on craigslist right now. hes had it overclocked to 4ghz on air cooling. if my system cant handle the games i have at hand ill probably grab that for the mean time...

Yea, Ive had all the Diablos since the beginning, love em. Its more of a fun hack n slash as opposed to a serious skill set strategy mmo.

And I was watching darkfall since it was in development about 7 years ago. lol Ive just never had the system to play anything like it. And with the subscription fee and not much free time, It doesnt really appeal to me.

i have a pentium d 3.2 which are known to easily hit 4-4.5 on air cooling. ocz 650w high efficiency psu and a scythe mugen 2 heatink (its freakin massive). the only thing stopping my ocing right now if my shitty ram. not much improvement in games over the 9500gt, cpu must be extremely lagging the system. could also be cuz i didnt do a clean install of windows after swapping motherboards...
