I need advice, and alot of it

Post by Conrad17 »

hi, ive been visiting this site for awhile and just signed up lol ive had an mx-3 for about 2 years now and love it, its a great car, ive been tinkering and messing with it for awhile and i have stumbled upon a few problems that i cannot solve.

1. i have another mx-3 a 92 1.6 SOHC AT, and ive been told to swap the motors ill have to change the crankshafts because my car has a MT, is this true?
2. im wondering which is better for a hp boost, ive been looking at the GUDE racing kit, or should i just turbo it, cuz ive heard the 1.6 sohc take kindly to forced induction.
3. does anybody know where to find forged pistons for the 1.6 SOHC? i cant find them anywhere.

sorry for asking so many questions, but i figured you guys would know
thanks

The crankshaft thing is bulls---. I've done it myself more than once.

The flywheels use the same bolt pattern between auto and manual flywheels.

Most people looking for REAL power in the 4 bangers swap to the 1.8L BP, and boos that. the SOHC has ZERO aftermarket support, and as you already found.

A few people boosted the SOHC, but its hard, and expensive.

Yes, the 1.8L BP bolts right in, etc.

and pistons on these are never the weak point. Its always the transmission, or rods. I've seen a few KL pistons burn, but thats freak.
Now with Moderator power!

2003 Forester Xti - EJ20K swapped.

The engine is the same regardless of the transmission installed. Your ATX engine will bolt up to an MTX tranny just fine. The important thing is that the MTX uses a flywheel, where your ATX has a flex plate so when you remove the MTX from the donor car you have to take the flywheel and clutch as well...which are bolted to the crankshaft...and put them in place of the flex plate that you currently have. Just unbolt the flex plate and bolt on the flywheel. Probably best to have it resurfaced and replace the clutch while you have it all apart.

I'm not extremely familiar with the 1.6L SOHC and performance questions. Someone else is probably better for that question.

The 1.6L Miata used the same block as you and there are lots of piston options for that engine. Go to http://www.importperformanceparts.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and click on Mazda-->scroll down to pistons and there are several manufacturers listed. You can use pistons for any 1.6L Mazda application. Protege, 323, Miata, SOHC, DOHC...doesn't matter. This gives you a range of compression ratios to choose from.

Ryan's right though...if you want more power swap in a BP.
94' RS/GS/MS/CF Monster Turbo...coming soon.
93' GS SE, the Black Beast, the former love of my life...soon to be gutted and crushed.
94' GS, black on black, now in several small pieces...and one large crushed piece.
2007 Mazda3 GT Sport --- super fun
2004 Honda RC51 --- Lost forever to some theavin' bastard

I am also for swapping in a BP. Main reason is the support for the BP.. you can find lots of aftermarket support for it!
