Need Help Identifying Engine

Post by Meghan »

Hey guys I recently bought a '93 MX3 and the previous owner swaped the engine but didn't tell us which one it is. I haven't been able to find the ID number for it and can't find anyone in my town who can tell me what it is. Didn't do any research on the MX3 until after I bought it. I love the car except for a stalling issue I have yet to be able to solve. So I was hoping someone on here could help me out. I would like to know the engine modle and year so I can start buying parts. Any help is appriciated. Thanks.

Also if you have any information on ignition loss for this car. It keeps stalling while I am driving and has no spark. If I sit and wait a few minutes it will start again and I can make it home with a few more stalls. I think it's the coil or possibly the distributor but I can't find anyone who wants to work on the car at a shop. Again thanks for any help you can offer. :D

That's either the B6 (same engine that comes with the car) or a B8.
Look at the block, right in front of cylinder 3. If you have "BP" cast, about 1" under the head, it's a B8. That's the SOHC version of the BP, 1.8 L, that comes on the Protege. If it doesn't, it's the original, 1.6L B6.

By the way: try to get the exhaust header heat shield back on, or the heat from the exhaust will eventually mess up the fans.

Hey thanks alot. I think it's the 1.6 B6. That helped me. And I will make sure to get that heat sheild back on. Thanks!

It probably is. It'd make no sense to upgrade from the B6 to a B8, when for the same price you could have the (much better) BP, so it follows that the person who did the swap didn't do it as an upgrade, but as a replacement.

You're welcome. Welcome to the forum :)

Just as a suggestion, next time you will probably get more responses if you post in the right section...;)

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. He said it had been in a wreck so he probably just had to do a swap to replace it. And yeah I wasn't sure where to post this haha. I'll look at the forum more before I post stuff. Thanks a lot.

Anytime. :)

I'd recommend you to start reading, especially the 4 cylinder tech section and the worklogs. You will find a lot of good info in there, from how to fix common (and not so common) problems with the car, to how to do an engine swap, if you're looking for some more power, even to how the car looks on different color paint, and with different add ons.
And then, you can start a worklog of your own...
