flywheel interchangability on 1.6l motors.

Post by seawulff »

i just swaped my 93 sohc 1.6 to a dohc out of a 95. i used the flywheel off of the sohc motor and put it on the dohc motor and when i am under 1500 rpms the car shakes a little bit. im not sure if its the flywheel or not that is causing the problem. the sohc flywheel didnt have any weights on the back of it but i dont know if the newer dohc motors have weighted flywheels or not. does anyone konw anything about this.

shouldn't matter. I bet they're the same flywheel...

yeah it seems like it should be the same flywheel because the blocks are the same. i wonder what is causing the shaking than. the sohc and dohc have different flywheels but should be interchangable. it looks like the only dif is the dohc motors have 7 7/8 clutches and the sohc has 7 1/2. i would assume the weighting should be the same though. just dont know if someone knows about this.

Really, a weight difference on something that is symmetrical shouldn't matter. Balance wise, worst case you have uneven pressure on the crank bearings.

Crappy motor mounts? The engine has a different mass, and will have a different resonant frequency. I'd just deal with it. Adjust idle, change mounts...

there not doll pins mounted differently from the sohc and dohc not to mention the dohc clutch disc and pressure plate is physical a bit larger than that of the sohc. I bet its the same is incorrect. Compared to know the answer to that ?

If u have a sohc flywheel u hv to use a sohc clutch disc and pressure plate and vise verse. A sohc flywheel will not interchange with a dohc pressure plate and vise verse. Reason why the doll pins do not line up correctly on the pressure plate.

Both flywheels interchange with sohc and dohc the pressure plate is the issue.

I have used an 1.8 F series (1999+ protege) clutch and flywheel on a B6 SOHC, so I imagined, if Mazda made those similar enough, why would 2 B series not match up?

I suppose not everything makes sense. Sorry for a bad guess.
