just failed my emissions test

Post by RayRay »

NOx - standard: 1134
reading: 1946
HC - standard: 146
reading: 163
I asked the guy if it was something with the cat. He said it should be something with the EGR or some sensors, etc. I love this car, its a blast to drive, but damn its costing a fortune to maintain, repairs, repairs, repairs. I just had to vent this....

I just went to the mechanic. He saw the reject paper, and the first thing he said was Holy $#(*! He showed me a paper with a car with a properly working cat. and the level was 1xx. He said most cars don't even get near the 11xx limit. Now I'm looking around for a new cat, preferably a straight-fit car, need to save on labor.

I found a direct-bolt-on cat for $185 online at www.all-catalytic-converters.com. Sounds reasonable, especially since the mechanic told me the dealership would want $550 for one. But I found a shop that would "help" me pass for $60, problem is I'd have to go there every other year for inspection, rather than fix it now and never worry about the cat again.

We are driving our MX-3 without current inspection. They recently dropped the maximum emissions number as well as requiring a dyno run. This makes it REAL hard to pass. Her car seems to be running fine, but we have failed the emissions 4 times! We have checked all sorts of stuff. We have run injector cleaner, ethanol, checked the timing, replaced plugs, checked the plug wires, checked the idle speed, checked the air bypass settings, etc. Still cannot get the thing to pass. The check engine light has NEVER come on. We even hooked it up to a Snap-On diagnostics computer and it said there were no codes. We think it must either be the o2 sensor or the cat convertor. I called Mazda and they want $213 US for an O2 sensor. I checked around and the cheapest OEM style replacement O2 sensor was at Nopi, but they are out of stock and have been for several months. I guess that I need to call them again to see if they have gotten that expected shipment yet.
