wheel brands

Post by Inodoro Pereyra »

Being that I still don't have my MX-3 (planning on buying one ASAP), I decided to save some future delays by planning ahead.
Now, one of the biggest issues for me (because I don't really know squat about it), is wheels. Ideally, I would love to be able to get some Volk TE 37's, but I don't think I can get the money for them.

So, my question is: which brands do you guys recommend that are reliable, in terms of withstanding the stresses imposed by some very hard driving, and a powerful engine?

I have read Rotas are famous for breaking on you when you drive them hard. Which brands can take the abuse?

Thanks in advance... :)

Rota's USED to be like that, they got a bad rep and now have a hard time recovering. They switched metals and now have a stronger wheel. You can get a Rota Grid which is a te-37 knock off. Don't get me wrong, they are still not as strong as a Rays forged wheel, but for everyday normal to aggressive driver you will be ok.

I had a set of Konigs heliums in 17" and they were great, never bent or cracked them and I hit some pretty hard potholes by accident at times, they withstood abuse well. They have various styles at decent prices.

If you wanna save money and get the style of a expensive wheel consider these:

Drag wheels
Spun wheels
Rota wheels
XXR wheels (formely Sportmaxx)

Some people will tell you to stay away but s---, if money is tight what are you gonna do, not everyone can drop 2-3g's for a set of te37s or most volk/rays wheels for that matter.

Another good wheel to check out is Enkei, they make dope wheels like the RPF-1 which is a swesome strong and light wheel that most pro drifters and racing doods use. Check out their lineup. 5Zigen FNO1-RC is also a sick wheel that is light and looks good. These are some just off the top of my head

Thank you.

I've been doing a lot of reading, and finally decided on the RPF-1. It's light, looks good (although I rather like a more solid, simpler look), and it's less than 1/2 the price of the TE 37's. You can't beat that... :D

Enkei PF-01's should be out anytime. I think 17.7 is 16lbs and they are nice.
My next set (for the XB) will probably be Rota Boost or XXR 518.

JWMX3: yeah, I know what you mean... But, as much as I love the TE 37's, more than $600 each is a little too much...

RS: I saw the PF 01's. Not bad, but way too open for my taste.

I've got Enkei's on both my MX-3s, and the ones on the fast car have taken a serious beating. I slid on ice, and hit a curb so hard that it tore my tire open. There's not a scratch on my rim. They weigh about 15 lbs each, and came free with the cars. Most Auto-x MX-3 guys use them, and I've seen them on other cars. The only thing I'm not excited about is that they look like honeycomb cereal. The very last mod I'll do (and I've done ALOT 8) ), is lighter rims, because they will make the least difference per cost of all the other mods.

I'm sorry, but i have to stand up for the ROTAs. given that i've owned 3 sets. (bought the last one 3 weeks ago for the mx-3) :D
I like them, they're light as heck (15"x6.5" @ 12lbs) and on our cars, light wheels DO make a hell of a difference. i have a miata as well, and i can tell the difference between a 16lb wheel and my ROTAs (same tires, just diff wheels).
Also, i know they used to be bad, but they've improved a lot.
Just consider this, the Limited RWD winner on Time Attack at the Laguna Seca was Fuji-Racing's '94 IRTB miata, and he rocks Rotas. i personally know the guy, and he speaks very well about them. that's the reason I bought them.
just my $.02
PS: idr if it was Laguna Seca or Bottomwillow, sorry.

12,000 miles of Rotas on chronic British and Irish roads and still sitting straight. I'm on 17x7.5s and they're 7.7kg, hard to beat for the price. I'd happily buy them again, though still crave a forged set of 15/16s!

Now that is true. Mind you I wouldn't use windows on that basis, and alot of other things!

Thanks guys. :D

I'm pretty much set on the Enkeis. Even when I'm not crazy about the looks, they're light and cheap, and have a good reputation.

About Rotas...maybe they're better now, but I couldn't use them knowing their previous reputation. I'd be driving in fear...
