I don't think there's any extra space for the bolt to be put in any other way, it's made to be pretty snug. On a side note however, I find it scary that a small bolt like that is the only thing holding the ball joint in the knuckle :|

How do you check the swaybar end links?

Pull up and down firmly. Any sort of movement=bad. Make sure they aren't loaded. (both tires on level ground, or both in the air)
