Try changing the gear oil to something a bit thinner, maybe even synthetic. After sitting for a bit the oil cools down and becomes thicker, making shifter harder, then it warms up after use and becomes thinner. And like engine oil it degrades over time, making it even worse.

My 96 1.8 v6 k series auto has the EXACT same issue. I let it go on procrastinating about the problem and when to fix it ect. Now the car is in the tranny doctor office getting looked at because for the last week, the car also began to shift slowly like it was thinking about shifting then would shift. Reverse feels in neutral then gives her all by herself. It would sporatically redline to 8 rpm's say if I was turning a corner fast or punched on the gas to merge into traffic, when I let off the gas, problem stopped of course.
The car just had an oil and tranny fluid change on the 6th(I think they put the wrong fluid in my car). Prior to that the fliud was continuously topped up with dextron 3.
There is a tranny fluid leak that is sudden and major.
Today on my way to the tranny doctor,it wouldn't get our of first gear and the rmp's were extremely high and it sounded like the engine was going to blow up , so I eased off the gas and barely applied any pressure to the gas.I couldn't go faster than 10km/h all the way to the shop.
Half way to the shop I turned around to go home and put more tranny fluid in, and headed out to the shop again..the problem didn't go away.

Get er looked at before you run into something like this.

You say this happens when it's sitting for a while before driving? Could be the hydraulics losing pressure. When driving a lot, pressing the clutch builds pressure but if you have a leak somewhere, when you're not driving and the clutch is sitting, it will lose pressure. If this happens, then the clutch won't be disengaging all the way when you shift, and it will cause you to feel a grinding-like feeling when shifting, especially on the lower, faster-spinning gears (such as 1st and 2nd). However, after a while of driving, it may ease up due to the presure build up by using the clutch. This commonly happens when the inside of the clutch slave or master cylinder go bad.

I'm gonna make an educated guess that it's the gear sychro, but I'm not really sure.

Synchros yea, but changing the gear oil will probably help a good deal. The oil in my tranny looked like it had never been changed, it was all broken down and sludgy. I put in some cheap synthetic and after a few hundred kilometres I can feel a good difference, it downshifts much easier without rev-matching and is just generally smoother.

My new used tranny (I bought after the tranny that came with the car) has been reving like in neutral after warming it up and driving off in first to second, let off the gas and it finally changes. Though it goes away slightly after I drive it around. Tranny doctor says it's sticking valves,so they changed the fluid and put in a lubricant to prevent that...hasn't helped..so much for my luck with mx3's..trading her in after a tough 7 months of headache $1,700 in motor repairs, $1,100 in tranny problems and finally major heartache. I feel like I am breaking up with my boyfriend ,lol.. :crying:
