Engine Oil

Post by WhiteFinish »

I've tried to search it, but couldn't find it that easily.

So here is the question again.

What kind of Engine Oil would you use in a V6?

Is it dependable on outside temperatures?
- mile on the engine?
- maybe other things

Currently I'm using 5W30 full synt oil. But, maybe it's a bit thin for an engine with 100k on it.

there was a BIG discussion on this last year. I'm going to do a search as I want to go synt. Lots of pros and cons about each brand. Check again it must be there. I'll search later when I have time.

There's a FAQ on the forums at http://6crew.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that was derived from information at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . There is some very interesting information there.

Im running Castrol 10W30 Synthetic right now. At my next oil change I'll go to 10W40. When it gets really hot in the summer I'll go to 15W40.

Wow, shows just how much I know about motor oils, turns out I know absolutely nothing.

And wytbishop, you should read through that thread http://www.6crew.com/forum/showthread.p ... ight=motor, you'll find out that it's always better to run 0Wxx oil unless you rarely change it.

Oh man I actually just read most of that. Burned out my last brain cell doing it. So wytbishop, Castrol 10W30 Synthetic is working well for you? I'm changing over to syn oil and I want to make an informed choice.

Oil is a huge matter, as its what usually kills a motor in the end.

It seems all the article I read said was "Buy 0W30 Synthetic"

Sweet.

Yes the engine definitely feels slipperier.

But seriously Dan, I can't imagine how you'd feel or even notice a difference between motor oils. Even if you had the completely wrong oil in your engine you wouldn't know until it started to wear out really fast. But the benefits of Synthetic oil are well documented and my ZE is in just amazing condition and I'd like to keep it that way. $45 every few months is not too big a deal.

Whenever I install a used engine I always run the first few hours with Heavy Duty oil to clean out some of the gunk. Then I switch to the appropriate weight of synthetic for the climate. Change the oil WITH A NEW FILTER every 5000km (3100mi) and your engine will be very happy.

why would you run truck oil in mx-3? I run same in my Cummins Diesel, that's some thick stuff.

I just switched over to synthetic (5W-30) and it's working out great, no leaks, and I actually noticed a slight improvement in fuel economy. Dunno why, only explanation I can think of is if engine's more slippery it would take less energy to drive it? Wish I had oil temp & pressure gauges though... then I could really get the best results.

Our winters get down to -40ºF/C (same number)

so in winter I'd love to run 0W30 Synthetic

and in summer I'd love to run 10W30 O-Natur-elle

because I feel no need for synthetic in summer. I'm good with my oil changes.
