That's where the "search" feature come in.

OH! Looky what I found with a simple search...with the term "paperclip"
lazzer408 wrote:Getting the codes was one of onlytrueromeo steps.

3) Take a paperclip and put it in the diagnostics box on the right hand side of the car (WITH THE CAR OFF) - jumping the pins GND and TEN. Use the search button here for a more detailed explaination, or check out the FAQ section. Just be careful when doing this not to connect to anything but the TEN and GND or the paperclip will melt

It's actually on the left hand (drivers) side of the engine compartment near the firewall. It's a 3x2" black box that has "diagnostics" on the top cover. Flip it open and you should have a sticker inside that shows the 'ten' and 'gnd' terminals. Jump them with the ignition off. Then hop in the car with a pen and paper handy and turn the key on but do not start the engine. This causes the check engine light to flash any stored codes. Count the flashes. blink-blink-blink.......blink blink..... would be 32 (for example).

It's unlikely you'd screw anything up unless you go modifying things or ripping off vacuum lines in a fury of frustration. :lol:

lol... wow this thread is entertaining. I clicked on it to say "it's your O2 sensor" bc that's exactly what it is. All I needed to read was the subject. Your spark plug swap is great, but it's not going to solve the issue in the long run. Eventually, you'll have to floor it just to get it up a hill, and when it's not at high RPM (which blows all the stank out of the area which your O2 sensor resides (in the exhaust FYI) - which is why your light goes off when you floor it) it will stall on you.

I know this, because when I was 16 (seriously) the same thing happened to me :)

FYI by the way, if you don't want to poke paper clips in to your "checker holes" you can drive up to your nearest Auto Zone and they will hook up a "checker" for free and tell you what the problem is.

Some cars will also tell you the codes (you have to count the blinks as described) if you turn your key up to accessory and off a couple times, then leave it there... dunno about the Mazdas haven't had to try it yet. I just go to Autozone ;)

I got such a great blee lol moment out of this thread.

Before anyone attempts a problem do the following:
Head = A
Rear = B

Remove A from B.

comparing not knowing where to stick a paperclip on my car to make the dummy lights come on and wiping my a-- are not related at all..

and than ill say.. if you told me to use a paperclip why not finish telling me what to do with it.. why would you make me go and search for it

Im glad you think you helped me kind of.. but thats like me telling a kid how to have sex and i go "GET AN ERECTION" and than just not tell him the rest.

is my way of thinking starting to be more like yours yet!? EHHH haha

DAMN I didn't even look at this post till now and it is SUPER FUNNY!!

I took my car out for the 2nd time this yr... just around the area to make sure it still works fine... I got a CEL code so I pull over... grab the trusty paperclip out of my glovebox and figure out it's my EGR still.... Those are over rated anyway! ahah simple and it only takes 2 min!!

I mean I wen't to school for autobody... but sh*t... I have the common sence to know if you don't know about an engine, a body won't do you much sitting there!

And what did "canadians" have to do with anything... how did that comment come into play??

Ohhh what the hell I am to late on this one!
