How do you get the rear LCA bushing out?

Post by Whisper »

Tried punching it out like I was doing with other bushings, but no go. So I started to drill it out around the perimeter, to loosen it, and it squirted black liquid. I suppose that was oil at some point, but now it's more like ink, and it smells awful, and it's all over the place. Also I couldn't drill all the way through the bushing, because there seems to be some kind of hard washer inside it. I dug a bunch of rubber out, but it doesn't seem to budge. Is using the press the only way?

I used a press and it came out pretty easily. but it you heat it with a torch until the rubber starts to break down and then pound it out with a hammer that should work too. You would have to use a hacksaw to remove the outer sleeve of the old bushing as it would be left behind.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I think I want to reuse the metal sleeve, so I'll just try cleaning it up on the inside.

I think you misunderstand. The bushing itself has a thin steel sleeve that presses into the shell which bolts to the frame. Once the rubber is pushed out, the thin sleeve needs to come out too. Just put a hacksaw blade through the shell and cut through it (Just a few strokes). Then you should be able to easily peel it out.

Yeah, I know there's a sleeve. But I don't have a replacement one, so I wanted to reuse it. Wouldn't cutting it make it unusable?

A what? There's no lower bolt on LCA. Are you sure you're in the right thread?

What are you planning on replacing it with? Poly bushings require the sleeve to be removed (I asked this very question of the guys at SuperPro) and OEM replacements will have a new sleeve as part of the new bushing.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if new bushings come with a sleeve, but yeah, looks like they do, so sleeve is out now. Thanks.
