timing belt slipps off.....????

Post by exile84 »

Hey everyone,
I am having a bit of a problem, I was going out to start my car the other day, and it started for like 3 seconds and died. I thought maybe it just died cause of the cold weather, so I tried to start it again, sounds like it has no compression..... I get out to look under the hood, and the dang timing belt slipped off. I get it to my granddad's house, and i get the timing belt back on and timed perfect. I go to start the car again, and it does the same thing. Anyone know why this would happen, Or had this problem before???? Would the pulleys make this happen/?? The belt is new, but i have never replaced the pulleys........Thanks for the help in advance..

Did you inspect the timing belt tensioner?

i checked the tensioner and the adjuster, the adjuster is fine, which i thought would make the tensioner work. (???) The pulleys dont really roll very freely. Maybe they are worn out? Should they be kind of stiff to roll???

The pulleys should be very stiff for you to hand turn them.

I suspect a bent pulley or idler .

How it happened? I have no idea..

Maybe try replacing the tensioner anyways... If you plan on keeping it for a while, then it wouldn't hurt. How many miles do you have?

well the motor has like 160 k on it. but i have only put about 30k of it on there. I got the car about 3 years ago, and have had nothing but problems out of it. I just wish I could get it running right. I want to get a mazda3. But in order for that to happen, i have to have this running, to use as trade in to go with some money down. So i would like to get it running quick.......
