Funny charge light

Post by NorCalMX3 »

Okay, so my charge light has become quite sporadic. sometimes when i'm driving, it stays off. more often though, it stays on at a low RPM, but will fade out at a higher rev. does this signify a slowly failing alternator? or maybe just a new belt? the car itself seems to run okay and i haven't had to jump-start it yet.

any advice would be great!

Make sure your cables are on tight. My light did that after I changed my battery out and got in a hurry and forgot to tighten them.

Just to add, make sure the post's and terminals are free of the green or white death. CORROSION. That's a killer.

No corrosion, battery terminals are very clean. I

tightened the terminals on my battery, seemed to help a bit, but the problem still persists.

okay so i figured out it is my alternator, the question is now, when i remove the alternator, do i take it out from the top or the bottom? i'm guessing that i have to remove the radiator to get to it. any advice on pulling it would be greatly appreciated. by the way, it's the gs :D

check the shop manual, but i believe you got to take it out from the bottom, removing the AC compressor if you have one (from the mounting, you can leave the lines hooked up). i dont think the radiator needs to come out, but maybe pull the fans if you want extra room

If you have A/C remove the rad and take it from the top. Takes like 10 mins and no crawling under the car. Good time to replace rad hoses and have a look around too.

Congrats on the find. But, what gave you the GO-AHEAD that it's the alternator?

Thanks,

Chris

his symptoms were classic alternator failing signs

i respectfully disagree with mr dan... compressor's only four extra bolts, and you don't have to mess with all the coolant dripping plus extra cost to refill

I would replace the alt. It can be removed without taking the rad out. There is only one bolt on bottom.
