92 to 95 Interchangeability. (Please reply ASAP)

Post by steckino »

I have a 1992 Mazda MX-3, and my friend has a 1995 MX-3. We both have the regular version (Non-GS)
I would like to buy his, but he has a few things wrong with his car... such as a bent spindle(rear drivers side), bent tie rod, a crack in the windshield, ball joint issues, brakes. So I am wondering how much of these years are interchangeable.
My motor seems to be going, and my body has received a lot of dents and rust my front bumper is cracked and I don't want to do any bondo to it... and I can't pay to buy a new one and get everything else fixed. My paint is chipping on my car and I don't want to spend 1000 dollars on a paint job and still have the car want to die. The 95's body is in much better condition then mine, his motor is as well, granted his Oil pan leaks a small bit (BTW is a B6 oil pan capable of going onto a B6D Engine?) I am sorry if this thread seems a bit over the top. I just want to get a car on the road and not worry about it for a while (granted do whatever to it that way it doesn't break down).

For the most part those cars are the same. As far as I know the drivetrain and running gear were not changed except for the conversion to OBD2. That means that the sensors and various other electrical components of your old 92' will not be compatible with the 95'. AS far as sizes and fit, things will be the same. I'm not sure if ABS was even an option for the RS you might have a few differences if one has it and the other doesn't. All the B6 engine blocks are the same so that oil pan should interchange as well.

I don't know all that for sure, but I would do it if I were you.

Thank you for a quick reply.
Alright then, I even consulted my Fiancee in this decision and she is a go on it as well. Wish me luck then. My friend is going to sell it to me around 300 to 500 dollars. I hope that everything goes smoothly.

A '95 should not be OBDII, mine isn't.

I think everything you mentioned would be interchangeable, but I'm not the authority by any means.

My 95' RS was OBD2.

The change to OBD2 was mandated to take effect for the 96' model year, but Mazda took the initiative to begin producing OBD2 cars in mid 95'. I had one.

Well, the 92-93's where the SOHC while the 94+ are DOHC. Even if they're OBDI, their wiring harnesses are supposibely different since you can use the 92-93 harness for a BP swap, but for the 94+, you have to swap the harness or rewire it.

You are absolutely right, and I should have been more clear.
I wish my '95 was OBDII, but it isn't. :(

hmmm...you learn something new every day. Is that a difference in the windage tray or something like that? Does it even bolt up?

the sohc have a windage tray similar to the FWD BP's windage tray..

the dohc has no windage tray more like a hard to explain but its setup is similar to a FS 2.0 DOHC. its like a 2 piece

i know this post is dead, but I bought my friends car for 150 dollars. Sadly it's in worse condition. So my original idea is in the dust now.

My Mazda during the winter ended up getting hit by a snow plow. My father decided to park it too close to the road. Had a headlight busted, and the hood dented in ... Just my luck. Anyways, I plan on putting the 95's Hood, front bumper, left fender, and doors onto my 92. THING about the doors though... the 95's got power windows/locks... big problem with that is... HOW would I get them to work in a car not meant to have it? I can't get around to checking the forum for the answer if someone has done it already. I'd have to change the locks on it as well since the 95 wasn't supplied with keys. (It has a switch ignition)
Get a black paintjob... maybe get a front bumper from corksport, and pay the 300 for someones OEM sideskirts.
Later on putting his B6D into my car... 107HP (roughly) is just fine for me, much better then 88 HP from the one I have.

I swapped out to power windows. It "may" work with your stock wiring harness, but it might not. For me it did not.. if it doesn't work for you like that, let me know and i'll try and see if i can remember which wires i spliced to where so you know how to get it running.

W/ power locks and everything? I figured it would just only be a simple splicing, and added wiring; seeming the controls are in the door.

I didn't do the power locks, just the windows. And yes the controls are in the door (the passenger door getting it's main power and ground from the driver's door.

There's a post and it could be in FAQ on how to route power in the newer drivers window switch so it will control the passenger window. They did change how the sytem works but you can correct it by jumping a wire on the drivers switch board.
