Water inside clear rear lights-what's the fix?

Post by Buckminster »

I noticed the rear signal lights were fogged up with condensation, then I noticed that the lenses were about a 1/4 full of water. What's the deal? Do I have cause to return the lights? The other one is fine and seems to be well sealed.
Anyone had this problem. I don't know what brand they are, they came with the car. They look like "altezza'" but it doesn't say anywhere on the assembly. Can they be opened up and cleaned/dried?

I now see that it is a common problem. I think I'll just put the original ones back in.

Yes, this is a common issue with "altezza" style after market rear taillights.
I had the same problem, I used a heat gun and took the lenses off, cleaned the inside of the housings, painted some parts black, and then re-attached with extra sealant.
To further offset condensation / water from re-appearing, I drilled small holes along the bottom of the lamp.

That is also another good option. :D

How did you get the lenses off without breaking them? I didn't do the swap so I notice that the 'altezza' lights seem to have a press-in type mounting method where the OEM lights have threaded metal posts. Would you mind explaining how they mount? From the look of it there must be nuts and washers missing from the OE units, because there are just bared studs. I notice now that the old lights have small cracks in the lenses beneath the surface. Probably from weathering.
I thought about drain holes to but now there is a film of black shite on the "chrome' surface to the level that the water reached. I am just glad I noticed before it froze, then it would be a waste.

Thanks for the reply.

Everytime I come back from the scrapyard there is something else I need.
What about the little plastic trim grommets? Where do you find the right size for those?
