Pulse generator, what is it for and is it vitile?

I'm fixing up a '93 mx-3 GS, I checked the codes for the transmission and the engine. One of the codes was for the Pulse Generator. I found where it is and how to test it. When I went to go to test it I found that the 3 wires from it had been cut. I spliced them back together and did the tests. The test showed no resistence on the circuits for it. I dicided to check the codes again just to see if it was still displayed, and it isn't.

What is the pulse generator for and is it vital to the way the car runs? I think I read that it was for the curse control, but I'm not sure. Any info is appreciated, thanks
