Tires + Rims - Opinion?

Post by Thassodar »

I was looking around last night and found the following tires:

http://www.wheelmax.com/product.asp?ProdID=14460" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

At 4 for $288. I'm due for new tires about now, and they've gotten good reviews here: http://www.1010tires.com/tirereviews/Ha ... views.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I live in the south so snow isn't much of an issue.

I also found these rims: http://www.wheelmax.com/product.asp?ProdID=13662" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They're Nex-O 16" 5 spoke rims. I have found nothing bad about Nex-O rims on the web, but I'd rather have someone else's opinion on them. The only bad thing I found was that the black/dark ones chip after awhile. Anyone had any experience with Nex-O?

Now my MX is the 1992 1.6L version, and it hasn't been lowered or anything. It currently has 13"s on it, if I'm not mistaken. I've heard 17"s are the absolute biggest tires you can get for a MX-3, so I went with 16"s because I don't care for overly large tires. I really like the look of those Nex-O rims, but I have little to no experience when it comes to tire companies outside of Goodyear and Michellin. Is Hankook a good tire company?

Total from wheelmax I could get the tires and rims with free shipping + mounting and balancing for $671. What do you guys think?

not bad lookin rims. Might have too many harsh lines to be paired up with the MX.. Just my opinion tho. Seem like a good price. You will notice the extra weight while driving tho. Esp if you don't have any power adders. Hankook is one of the biggest names in performance rubber. But every company has different grades.

I think 205/40 R16 are a little too small for the mx3, 205/45 R16 or 215/40 R16 might work and look a little better, plus its the recommended size so that your speedometer doesn't get messed up

the rims aren't bad, especially the price :)

BTW you can fit 17, 18, and some even tried 19 inch wheels in the mex3, but I wouldn't go past 17 because then they get very heavy and can get damaged easily

Found some of the same Hankook tires as Wheels Max, but in the size the guy suggested here: http://www.bizrate.com/automotivetires/ ... 79291.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They're cheaper, yes, but what would be the main difference between the two sizes? I honestly don't know enough about tires to know how they would look, unless they were side by side. Up until now I've been driving on fat tires (all season, generic Michellin), so this is my first step into low profile territory. I DO know some places refuse to rotate/balance your tires if they're not the factory specified size (Costco I'm looking at you).

How much of a change on my speedo would it be if I went with the 205/40/16 that Wheels Max suggested? Main reason I want to stick with them is because I'd probably get the wheels and tires all in one shipment, AND they've got mounting and balancing included in the final price.

http://www.tires.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; suggests 205/45 R16 or 215/40 R16 you go on their web site and they have some nice combos there too, w/ free mounting, balancing and shipping. Thats where I got my wheels

anyways about the sizes, here a tire size calculator that can help you determine the right size

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

the stock tire that you have should be 185/65 R14 so when you put on 205/40 R16 it will be a little smaller so when your speedometer reads 60mph you will really be going 57.4mph. Also with the smaller tire, the gap between tire and fender is gonna be bigger and that just looks uglier IMO

Also, http://www.tirerack.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has tire rating in snow, rain, treadware, performance, tire weight. I suggest you check it out too to find the best performing tires for the money

Hey farotechy, look at your back driver's side tire. whoever put the tire on the rim put it on backwards... the tread is going in the opposite direction.
If you fall, then get back up........Luck favors the prepared

I have Hankook iPike 309 snow tires, and they are very good tires!

Although, as was stated before, not all tires made by the same company are the same, I would not hesitate to recommend Hankook tires to anyone.

The tire is directional and rotating in the wrong direction. Check the arrows in the sidewall.
