ZX2 Struts

Post by studboy13 »

OK, so I was searching through pages and pages of threads a few months ago looking for anyone who found a good deal on these struts. I found someone who said they found the struts for 140, but as luck would have it, my computer froze and i was never able to find the page again. anyway, does anyone know where i can get the set of struts for less than 200 on ebay?

Most Ford dealers don't carry them or even know where to look to get them...let alone some dude on ebay. The link posted above is one of the few places you can be sure to get them and at a good price too.

Since I don't want to start a new thread, I'll post here.

Everytime I read about ZX2 struts, people are always swapping out for different springs/coilovers.
My questions are:
What are your guys' opinion on stock ZX2 struts AND springs?
Would the stock setup provide any drop compared to stock?
Would I have to fix the camber with just stock struts/springs off a ZX2? I know you have to when you get ground controls or eibach springs.
Wytbishop, I know you've made a write-up, but I'm unclear if you used OEM ZX2 springs, S/R springs (if there is any difference) or lowering springs for the ZX2. You said your set-up did lower your car, but is it higher compared to other set-ups?
I'm also quite confused on the difference between stock ZX2 and S/R ZX2 struts. Isn't the S/R just stiffer, or is mounting different?
Is it bad to use regular ZX2 struts/springs?

The reason I ask all this is because I REALLY want to get rid of the dropzones... They killed my rear struts. There are plenty of ZX2's at my local PnP that I could pull suspension parts from.

That just about does it, Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm not totally clear on the difference, if there is any, between zx2 and s/r zx2. I believe that the S/R package was an upgrade to the ZX2, but don't quote me on that. I used the Eibach springs for the Escort rather than the ones for MX3 because what I heard was that the MX3 ones are usually back ordered and when Eibach releases some, they go really fast. Corksport lists them on their site but they never seem to have any. oemfordparts had the Escort springs in stock so I just went with them thinking that they would be very close and I find that they ride very well.

The Eibach springs did lower my car about an inch. I think it's perfect because as you all know I like my car to look basically stock. The Eibach springs are a minor upgrade for the ZX2. They are slightly stiffer and are supposed to lower the Escort about a half to one inch. The ZX2 struts are actually about a half inch shorter than stock MX3 struts, so the overall difference on an MX3 is about an inch. I didn't have any camber trouble. I'm sure other spring choices would lower the car more although I don't think that the KYB struts are shorter like the Tokicos are. I like the Eibach springs because they are only slightly stiffer than stock.

So, if I were to grab the strut assemblies off a ZX2, keeping the the original springs on them, I would expect a somewhat daily driver friendly ride?
It would have roughly a half inch drop and no camber issues. (good thing, high curb at end of driveway, car always scrapes)

If I could find an S/R ZX2 in the junkyard, would you recommend that I grab the strut assemblies off that instead? (provided its all in good shape) Comfort isn't a major concern. I'm just trying to get something that'll last a while. The more dependable, the better.

And thank you wytbishop for clearing up what I didn't understand.

yes they would bolt straight on and give you a very small drop. They should be somewhat stiffer than your stock ones, but given that you got them from a junkyard, they may be softer than new so you may not notice them any stiffer...especially since you would be changign from the DropZones.

I have just bought the ZX2 tokicos and MX-3 eibachs from a guy in Illinois and he has 2 sets of struts left.

He sold me the struts for $200.00 and the eibachs for $200.00. Both arrived within a week which isn't bad considering i'm in canada.

Here's his link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Tokico-F ... enameZWD1V" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Everything was brand new in the origional boxes and i'm installing them as we speak. He has the stuff listed on ebay but I called him direct and ordered the stuff over the phone. The price on ebay was slightly higher but he took like $15.00 off each or something. Pretty decent. The springs are only a 1" drop but I didn't want the car slammed, just better performance for the twisties. These springs and struts are matched for each other so you will not have any issues with blowing out the new struts. I can't wait to finish the install...i'm just taking my time to make sure everything is replaced like the rear seat stoppers and front spring perches. All my parts are here and i've just finished the painting. I'll post pics when i'm done.
