Ok, have a 93 gs. I have just over 210,000 miles. In the past 1000 or so im getting an awkward sputtering around 3000 rpm.
When i give it gas while driving the engine bogs down. After a few seconds it stabilizes and i can drive normally again.
Occasionally it will stall out if i'm slowing down or stopping
On my way home from work today on the highway i was doing 65 and when i would give it gas i would get nothing. I would floor it and the car would barley stay at 65 and forget about accelerating. (normally when i give it gas at this speed i have no problem picking up speed)
Sometimes during idle the rpms will jump to 2200 to 3000. I will drive slow in 1st or second, and as soon as i push the clutch in, the rpms will just jump up.
Ive had the problem while the engine is cold, and at normal temperature
I checked the the diagnostic and i get the code for the EGR valve.
I've looked at it a few times, but its in such a terrible place that its kinda hard to inspect it.
Im wondering if anybody else has had this problem before, and if so, have you fixed it. Is it actually my egr, or is it something else?
I also apologize if this has been posted before, but i searched and i could not find what i was looking for. I appreciated it if anybody can help me out a bit.
Possible EGR valve failure?

Re: Possible EGR valve failure?
egr doesnt cause a car to sputter or die out. Its just for emissions.

MX-3 w/ curved neck millenia klde, boosted @ 5 psi. /bov and wastegate are good!/ nitto drag radial/ gutted interior/ millenia red top injectors, vortech fmu/aem wideband/ all bolts ons/ Car put together 100% by me. Mechanic? who needs a mechanic? ew.. real men work on their own cars!

Re: Possible EGR valve failure?
this is true. EGR valves do control emissions.
But they can also can cause running problems.
The egr mixes exhaust gas with the incoming fresh air (using the exhaust gas with the air mixture allows it to be burned again, and thus reduces noX emissions)
This process should only happen until the engine gets to running temps as far as i know. If my valve is not functioning properly, that means that it is staying open even after the car is running at temperature. If the valve is allowing too much exhaust in, it would be leaning out the fuel to air mix, causing running issues.
Just as a proof, if you have another vehicle that happens to have a egr that you can reach (like i said before, mx-3's are not the most accessable), you could try this.
Let the engine warm up to normal running temp. Find the egr and press on the diaphragm to open the valve. The engine should bog down or stall. I've done this before on another vehicle.
So I dont need to know what an egr valve is or does. I understand that. What i want to know is if anybody else has encountered this problem (am i the only one?) and any other possible solutions besides replacing the egr.

Re: Possible EGR valve failure?
I would just block the egr if you dont care much about emissions. If its causing problems then, well swap it out. Its not that cheap unless you get it from an old engine.
