Turbo or no turbo

Post by UltraMagnus »

I need help and my chilton bible is not helping, I've got a 96 mx and I want to put a turbo in it
the chilton is unclear as to what I have under the hood and its too rainy to look at my block
it says the 95's have a B6ZE and its got no mx-3 listed under 96, so I'm assuming thats it but
and when I look to the interwebs for help it just gets more confusing
so what I4 is the the 96 mx3's and are they turboable

if memory serves me correctly...yes you have the b6ze and yes it can be turbo'd. i think they make turbo manifolds for it, but i could be wrong.

Yea. Sounds like your not ready to boost just yet. Do some research on what you have and what you need to make it run right the first time

Hmm, at this point a mod or admin may wanna move this to the forced induction or 4cyl forum..

I am not to familiar with the 4 cyl motor, but it can take between 5-8psi IIRC. Dont qoute me on it though haha

What is the B6ZE? I thought it was only the B6ME and B6DE, the DE being in 94+ mx3's, unless the ZE was that funky engine over is Australia or something.

The B6ZE was found in the 90-93 miata. I never knew it came in the mx-3...maybe its a type-o?

Pretty sure the 94+ 4 bangers are DOHC B6DEs.

I know mine is a DE, but you never know, mazda could have dome something freaky for the 96+, lol. After all, isn't that when the mx is offically switched over to full OBDII?

I'm still in favor of my type-o statement.

Yeah as far as I know there's no Chilton or Haynes specific for MX3s lol. The one I have is for 323s and Proteges, so there's some guesswork required :welder:.

Get ready for fun.
It's no easy task to get the turbo on the 96. While water, oil, exhaust are all the same... your ecu is gunna give you issues. I can tell you right now, you will not find an electrical diagram for your car. I'm going to guess that you are a Canadian, being as tho they were never made in the US in 96'.

Before you ask. Our 96's are OBDII. I have made up my own electrical diagram/ ecu pin out by using a continuity tester and many four-letter words. When I am ready, I should have my worklog posted and full detail on everything.

Find out what your power goals are and choose a turbo that is right for you. JGS tools can provide a custom turbo manifold for you when you know the type of turbo you will be using. You will need a turbo, new injectors, some sort of engine management, clutch, intercooler, wideband O2, boost guage, boost controller, Wastegate (if not internal), new exhaust, intercooler piping, fuel pressure regulator, lots of welding and some stuff I am forgetting. You will need to spend around 1-3000. Then probably a couple hundred on the dyno. A new suspension and upgraded mounts and bushings wouldn't hurt either. It also sounds like our stock tranny's could use an upgrade too.

Aside from everyone on this site, you are basically on your own. There are no bolt on parts for aftermarket turbos. Search around the forced induction threads and learn as much as you can.

thanks for the input, it really helps

as for the engine
the chilton i have is for u.s and canadian models of 323, mx-3, 626, mx-6, mellenia, protege, and ford probe years 1993-97
under section 1-9 on the chart provided, the mx-3 engines are as follows 92 B6E SOHC, 93 B6E SOHC, 94 B6E DOHC, 95 B6ZE DOHC
then there is nothing for 96(the year I have) there is not typo its B6ZE
