Re: New Muffler
The car will sound like a million angry bees and mosquitos that can't get out of a tiny little jar, with no muffler (terrible).94mxthree wrote:My muffler finally took a bump...whats a good after market muffler that will add performance but not make it sound ricey??Oh and whats a mx-3 sound like w/o a muffler?? thanks.
Flowmaster 60 series is an awesome muffler. You're not going to "add performance" regardless of which muffler you get.
Re: New Muffler
My roommate's MX-3 has a stock muffler.
My MX-3 had a cannon when I bought it.
I replaced it with a Flowmaster 60 series.
Best choice ever. Low mellow tones and no headaches while driving. Not as quiet as stock, but very quiet indeed.

Re: New Muffler
So where did you guys mount a 60 series muffler? middle or end of the exhaust?

Where the muffler goes...94mxthree wrote:So where did you guys mount a 60 series muffler? middle or end of the exhaust?
Re: New Muffler
the middle one is called a resonator and you don't want to take that out. bad ideas there.
I installed the flowmaster 60 series (at the end of course) and a flowmaster hushpower resonator (the LONG one) and it sounds great
of course, that's when I replaced my whole piping. I would suggest you just get the flowmaster 60 muffler if you're going cheap.

Re: New Muffler
flowmaster hushpower resonator ?? where did you mount that in the middle I'm sure? Superk what did spend on your exhaust?
Re: New Muffler
hundred something on the 60 series muffler
80 something on the hushpower resonator (goes in the middle, replaces that little muffler looking thing that's already down there)
150 on some headers
and 200 on new plumbing, flex pipe
60 on a magnaflow hi flow emisisons compliant catalytic converter.
all amounts to: enough

Sweet man... Wow!! How much power did you lose with all those mods?SuperK wrote:hundred something on the 60 series muffler

Re: New Muffler
modifying an mx3 exhaust loses you power??
Re: New Muffler
Well, probably about 5hp
I made up the lost power by adding masking tape to the side of my car.
but now my exhaust smells pretty
I can stand inside my car, my whole body fits between the headers and the radiator no problem
no more rusty pipes
and no more earaches on long trips.
It looks GREAT and I'm very happy with the finished product, though.
94mxthree, it doesn't exactly LOOSE power. however, you have to be very careful on the parts you choose.
on a stock B6, you want to keep the diameter the same, 1.75. Buy all your parts this size.
I haven't lost any power, but the power got shifted way up the powerband because I upped the pipes to 2 inches. I also installed a flex pipe, which will reduce velocity, but is more reliable.
All in all, in order to get the highest velocity and least backpressure, that magical rev location got shoved up higher in the powerband, so in normal daily driving, I'm not seeing the improvement my mods has given me. So it feels slower. Meh, It can always be slower. I'm OK with that. It looks good, OK?

Re: New Muffler
I have a magnaflow turbo muffler and 2.5" piping but I've got a bpt. It's loud but not fart can-ish at low rpm and goes almost silent when I'm boosting (sounds more like a big sport bike engine without boost). This is with a high flow cat and no resonator.
