high rpms on my ZE?
my ZE is running at what i think to be high rpms. at 50mph - the engine is at 3000, at 60-70 - nearly 4000 and 70 and above 4500 rpms. is this normal? i swear it feels like i need a 6th gear.

Re: high rpms on my ZE?
From what i've seen in other posts, this being talked about...
If you have the K8 Tranny then that is normal. To not have such a high RPM on your ze, you could have went with... I believe the 626, or probe tranny... don't hold me to that.

Your revs shouldn't of changed at all; your K8 should of revved just as high. It's a very common question, the last one probably just got bumped to page 2

Re: high rpms on my ZE?
so can i change the gears in my tranny? if so which ones can i use? im even thinking about fabricating a tranny with a 6th gear - im sure it wont be easy - so please dont thrash the idea - ive got plenty of time, patience and fabricating experience.

Re: high rpms on my ZE?
I think you can swap the 5th gear set with the 626 set, or it the final drive, or is all of them- search will have the answer! But I think it only drops it a few hundred (nothing drastic). I agree though, I'd love a 6th gear for highway driving. Good luck and make me one

Should have plenty of information in there for you.
Mx-6/626 tranny's have a longer 5th and a taller final drive (which lenghtens 5th, as well as all other years)
You can swap the 5th gear in itself, there's specific information in that thread about it. You really can't change the final drive, you need to change both the pinion gear and the differential to do that, and it's extremely difficult to change the pinion gear, so what I've read. You're better off just switching the entire gearset or even the whole tranny, but if you do that, you'll of course get the final drive and the longer 5th gear.
6th gear, good luck. There hasn't been talk about that for a few years, but whenthe board was at it's peek, it was a common subject. If you search for 6 speed you should be able to find some in-depth threads about it. I think the only real option was the Quaife 6-speed univercal FWD tranny, that was some ridicilous price like $15'000 or close to that
