Automatic Problem

Hey, recently my car has been having gearbox or transmission problems.
Changing between 1st and 2nd is fine
Changing between 2nd and third is alittle delayed but i can live with it
Changing between 3rd and 4th has stopped happening.

In 3rd gear it seems to want to change at around 2.5k revs but just seems to change into neutral where it will just rev until it hits 3.5k revs where its back in 3rd.

Ive tried looking for a new, re-conditioned or even 2nd hand gearbox but no luck here in the UK does any one have any ideas ?

Any help would be greatfully recieved. Rich

PS The Car is a 1991 model automatic 1.6i engine if that helps at all

Hiya Rich, that doesn't sound tooooo bad just yet.

What is the Trans fluid like? colour, smell? when was the filter changed last?

If you go to http://www.mx-3.com look on the left side, there is an online manual, in it there is the procedure for checking AT codes
from memory (prob safer to read manual tho) its....,
disconnect battery, pump/depress brake for 60 sec or so
there is a diagnostic box on the firewall, jump the GND and TAT (?)
connect battery, turn car on (not start), the hold light will flash codes at you (or the car will blow up )

had the same problem on a 626 it ended up being a MLPS switch. see in the maual if your car has one and a test procedure
