Hey look a valve cover:

Being the holidays now (would be nice if exams took a holiday too) there hasn't been much done.

So my next update will likely not be until next year.

Parts being ordered over the next while:

Mazdaspeed LSD
Tokico struts
H&R springs
Megasquirt 2 (they are like 250 bucks!)
GTR intake manifold
Garrett turbo of some sort or maybe a turbonetics package
ss exhaust

The rods are the Belfab H beams. I had a swedish F1 car mechanic visiting and he said they looked like stuff he would fab for the F1 cars back home so they have approval there. He was very finicky about having everything balanced and measured precisely etc. etc. silly sweeds

The rods fit with no problems and seemed to be quite nice quality for the price, time will tell if they can take a beating. Jim at Belfab is also really knowledgeable and had all the right answers when I grilled him about the rods and pistons.

Installed the fuel pump today, went in easy, its just a messy procedure because
you really cant avoid getting gas everywhere. Turn off your cellphone.

Want to see what almost 200 dollars of titanium keepers looks like?

Image

Im unhappy face about the cost but can't really do much if the keepers do not
fit correctly. They are sort of important.

I can assemble the head now. Pictures to follow !

So here are all the goodies ready to be put together, but I hit a snag

Image

Well heres a do not buy warning - this type of valve spring compressor does not
work on our heads at all.

Image

As you can see I need a D or C clamp idea to press down only on the spring

Finished getting those keepers in, id rather not have to do that again
without the special push tool I saw for 50 bucks online...

I had cleaned two sets of HLA's last year and now they are in the head. I primed
each one with some oil and all of them became super stiff prior to installation.

Image

It's starting to look like an engine now.

Image

Next step is cam oil seal and the oil & water pump

So I was looking through some old photo's today and found this:

Image

Thats after 220 000 km's give or take.

Heres an after shot. Porting / Polishing takes a hella long time. I see why
they charge 1000's of dollars after doing it myself.

Image

But when I look at this it makes it all seem worthwhile.

Had to wait for a few choice items in the mail.

I got nailed for over 30 dollars 'brokerage fee' on a UPS shipped item (headstuds)
that was marked as value 50 dollars on the customs slip.

Hah! So what I did was a little reading and to avoid this you call them up after
you get your tracking number and tell them on the phone you want to act as
your own broker. This works for packages coming through customs in your city
which is usually the case by air shipping. For ground it gets routed through
Winnipeg, great for them but crappy for me as im in Alberta. So again there
I called in and the to be 34 dollar charge was reduced to 4 bucks. Oh this
applies for Canadians only I think.. not sure if UPS tries to shaft people in the
states.

Enough talk

So I got:
Gates timing belt, arp head studs and a new oil pump

the oil pump has an O-ring! woohoo, fords BP pump did not have one

Been awhile since an update. Got a job so that kinda eats my time.

Have the engine almost ready to drop in, just need to get the clutch
put on correctly.

Image

The entire pulley side is brand new - water pump, oil pump, timing belt,
tensioners etc.

Image
Get tensioners from NAPA - 35 bucks each vs quoted 460 each from stealership.

Image

I also spent over 200 bucks on new belts, hoses and fluids for when its in. Including
enough oil and filters for 2 changes.
