Weird idle

Post by Brainless »

For the last few days, my SOHC engine has been idling between 2k and 3k depending on the engine temperature. Plus, it's oscillating at a constant frequency.

At the same time this problem started, I noticed my engine temp was going way to high, sometimes even in the red area. I quickly noticed my coolant was leeking. My car is in the shop right now to solve this.

The problem is, I don't see how the two problems can be related. So what could cause my idle problem?

Thx!

Your coolant is leaking from where? It's hard to diagnose without being more specific. Is it possible that your engine isn't actually as hot as your temp gauge indicates? If so, you could need to replace the coolant temp sensors. It's not uncommon for bad coolant sensors to cause erratic idle.

If the temp gauge is true, I'd definitely replace the thermostat. It takes about 20 minutes, and about $10.

Also, make sure your rad cap is allowing the pressure release that it should. Otherwise the pressure will find another path to get out.

Just received a call from the shop. Apparently it was the TPS.
