Coolant Temp Sending Unit

Now that i got my rs running. I have an "over heating" problem. I say that in quotes because i dont believe the motor is actually over heating. I started the car up today after filling up the coolant. Its about 20 degrees outside. The car starts right up and runs for maybe a minute and i look down at the temp guage and its already dead in the middle where the guage normally is at operating temp. So i get out and pull the radiator cap and top off the coolant. Let the car idle for about 5 min at the most and the guage is already fast approaching the H. So i shut off the car and feel both radiator hoses and they are barely warm. Touch the valve cover and its still cold. Let her sit for a while and than start her up again and does the same thing all over again. This time the hoses atleast felt warm. I wish i had one more day to work on the car but i have to go back to school until christmas break. Anybody else think its a faulty coolant temp sending unit?? Also there currently is no thermostat in the car because the previous owner took it out to see if that was the problem. So there is no way with cold coolant circulating from initial start up that the car is over heating in 5 min. Any other suggestions to check besides the coolant temp sending unit would be appreciated.

Mine would do the same thing in My bp, Turns out it was just the coolant temp sensor from the Escort GT and/or protege GT... U have to make sure you get the correct one for ur engine.

I dont really see the relevance since its the stock b6 in my rs. Only other info i left out in my previous post is that the coolant sensor right on the thermostat housing has been cut and ran to a toggle switch to manually control when the fan kicks on.

BLK-ORG Wire -> Temp gauge and BLK-GRN wire -> Fan

Just follow the BLK-ORG wire and make sure it is not shorted or open....

Yeah i was planning on purchasing a new sending unit and tracing the wire to make sure all is well. There is no way that motor is over heating that quickly.
