more power

Post by Stoney89 »

I was wondering if anyone knows about any more performance mods other than an intake for the DOHC 1.6L? Please list a few if possible.

more power from 1.6

Post by maine_mazda_bp »

you could use adj camgears ,bump your timing, some say you can take an exust cam and use adj cam gears to install it on the intake side iv seen this done to the 1.8 bp and it was dyno tested and gave 12 hp .The best way to get more power for the least money is to add the 1.8 bp from a escort gt or mazda protega the dohc 1.6 is said to only have 88 hp in the mx-3 and the 1.8 BP has 130hp plus you do little mods and you can have it at 150hp thats a that would be a 52 hp gain

The wiring would be the hardest part. The swap is easy.

bump the timing, get a highflow or gut the cat. muffler with 2.25inch cat back piping, if u dont have a intake buy or build a home depot one. listen at 4800-4900 u should hear the engine sound change to a louder deeper pitch and u will notice it accelerate faster, not much but noticeable in 3rd and 4th more than any other gear. if u do not notice this then under ur intake manifold ull see a little canister with a rod out the bottom and a vacumn hose out of the top. wiggle the rod up and down and spray it with some wd-40. 14 inch aluminum stock wheels over the steelies make a difference i thought. take first to the rev limiter and keep the gas down on the 1st-2nd shift this will spin in 2nd for a sec but ull catch 2nd in vics instead of around 4200-4400 waiting for vics. remove ur spare and sound deadening, i went as far to remove the heat guards between the exhaust and floor as they usually rot and rattle neways, either way it will never have much power unless u get blown...lol

it was a 83 diesel engine (XUD9) with 650.000Km on it, it did 17-20Km Pr Liter, but when it started to leek air into the fuel, and i tried almost everything to fix it, I sold it and bought my MX-3 :)

thats crazy i dont work on diesel engines too much. ya the mx3 isnt the most powerful thing in the bunch, but its not a common car and better then most. in handles amazingly even with the suspension thats 13 years old. the bp swap for this car seems to be the best way to get alot of hp while still being a good daily driver and not going turbo.

pick up a turbo manifold and turbo from the gtx, direct bolt on. Get an SDS extra injector controller to add fuel. Run 15 lbs for 200HP. Run it rich.
Tried NOS, Tried turbo, tried 1.8 w/ NOS, NOW V6
