2 Questions? First about COP and second about MX-3 ECUs

Post by Xtremethings »

First of all I am new somewhat according to my info to the left. But actually I deleted my old e-mail long ago and so I am now unable to obtain my login for that name so AKA (KLZE Porsche) Also on P/T!

But to my first question:

Has anybody been successful with a COP conversion? I am working on one myself and I need some tips for a true 6 channel system.

Secondly -I have heard that some people have been successful with using standard 2.5KL ECUs in an MX-3 swap. However I was working with a freind of mine to install a chipped ECU and his car wouldn't run with the chipped KL 2.5L ECU. So I tried chipping his K801 ECU and the car still wouldn't run. I pulled the KLZE EEPROM and installed the original EEPROM and the car runs. So does this mean that the 92-95 MX3 wiring/distributor/ECU are not compatible with KL 2.5L ECUs or EEPROMs or what? I have read that some cars get their CKP (crankshaft postion) signal from the crankshaft sensor and some get it from a sensor in the distributor. If this be true and since the distributor runs at 1/2 the speed of the crank then does this mean that a disty CKP signal will never work with crank CKP wired car? I am looking to make an adapter so that people can use the KL ECUS but I am stuck like a rock in a hard place. I have been breaking my brain studying 4 different wiring manuals and trying to compile all the information. Perhaps someone is much more schooled on this matter and can give me some hints.
That is just my two cents worth - but what can you buy for two cents these days anyway?

I don't think there are any members here that chip thier own ECUs. Thus I don't think that any of us know enough about the internal workings of the ECU to answer your question exactly. However, I do know a bit that I will share.
The ECU I use to run my ZE is a chipped K8 ECU. I was chipped through Cork Sport, who outsources the work to another company. My ZE is OBDI and so was my K8. I would think they need to be the same in order to work properly. You posted 92-95, but it depends on where the car was originally sold as to whether it will be OBDI or II in 95. I am not 100%, but think that most of the world got OBDII MX-3s in 95 and beyond. Since they quit selling them in the US in 94 we only go to OBDI.
The ECU uses both the crank and cam sensor of course. If I am correct, and I think I am, it uses the crank for cyl. #1 TDC and the cam for spark and fuel timing. I do not know much about tuning engine management, so take what I say at an elementary level.
If you need more info I would contact Grants on Team Eunos's website or Yoda here on MX-3.com

Thank you mucho for your info. I was not aware that most had gone to OBDII in 95. With the PGT's, MX-6's and 626 cars I don't believe they went to OBDII until 96. I guess the MX-3 cars were a year ahead of their time. They came out with the KL V6 a year earlier in 92 and went to OBDII a year earlier. hmmmm.....

Well I am still open to any more new info since I know very little about the MX-3. And thanks for the leads. I will have to hit them up.

MX-3's went OBDII in 96.. but there were some early bird cars that had OBDII as early as 94. All 96's are OBDII.

Well that sort of confirms what I had suspected. Someone had told me that all MX3 cars were wired the sam way from 92 to 96 but I was just finding too many inconsistencies. Was there any wiring variations between 92 and 94 1.8L V6 cars?
