Which setup to go with??

Post by Nomad_69er »

Hey guys, last night I just blew my 1.6L DOHC turbo. I want to know your opinions. My overall goal was to have a car that was reliable, not to cost me an absolute fortune, and still hit the 200hp mark...that's it! So now I'm wondering if I should just get a B6D rebuilt with a little stronger internals to avoid this problem again, to drop a BP and then turbo it, or go with a BPT? I really like having the turbo, it was a lot of fun and want to stick with another turbo solution! :D What do you guys think?

Thanks

P.S. And remember that I have all the turbo goodies for the B6D...

I say just drop in another b6-de its a stout lil motor but my ? is what kind of EMS are u running with. a safc just won't cut it if ur using one i don't know what ur list of mods it.

but in my setup i have never blown a motor. I had hydro lock thanks to my bro and spun a bearing that was my flaut. my current BP is holding up but i keep chunking trany's LOL.

for ur HP the b6-de can handle it very well in stock form i just replace and invest in some kind of EMS for reliabitly.

That was my downfall right from the start! All I'm using is the SAFC 2, an FMU, and a larger fuel pump. Do you think I should invest in better internals or are the stock B6D internals strong enough? Thanks for the help and if I stick with the B6, before it's running there will be a MegaSquirt in and tuned properly! :D

IN my BP-DE its not the BPT its the n/a verion it is boosted in stock form no internall work of any kind. then again i have a decent standalone a TEC II.

but no u don't have to biult the internals for the B6 its already a stout lil motor. MS-II known as mega squirt is in my opinion a hell of a lot better than safc-II and a FMU put together. invest in a wibe band trust me it will help u in the long run for tuning and safety if ur ever in the danger zone.

for amount of money ur going to spend on building a B6de why spend it if it will blow again with ur current setup money wasted. invest in MS-II or some other kind of EMS. i spend about 450 on another BP and 150 on a trans at the junkyard everythime they take a shyt on me. but lately i have been brecking trannys like crazy going on my 5th trns.

Ive been through everything you have, The turbo b6 blown engine ect. DONT ditch the turbo. The B6 engine can handle alot the key IS TUNING. The right fuel at the right RPM in line with temp, boost, intake air temp, timing, exhaust temp, load, ect. ect. ect.. Everything your stock ecm is NOT tuned to do with your setup. MegaSquirt is your friend if your on a budget. It is a must have. I recommend anyone planning on ANY future upgrades go standalone and your set for any future upgrades. Ebay sells MS. 2 for 300.00$ which is pretty cheap and installition is pretty simple with all the resorces on this site. only hard part is on computer tuning. Best to start out with a base map from a turbo miata then fine tune or find somone that knows alot about them. Dropping in a BP is a good Idea also but really the B6 Internals most likley was NOT your reason for engine failure. timing and fuel are crucial on a turbo setup. JWMotorsports ran like over 20lbs at revs close to 10,000 rpms ran it for over 10,000 miles on a B6 also put down over 450 Tq. One exzample why tuning is key. Detonation will kill any engine no matter how built it is. Good Luck.

i have 76k miles stock pistons and conrods out of an n/a merc capri.. you can plug and play them into your block.. i also have the top end with everything too.. b6de... this is a little more aggressive camgrind than urs and is the same identical setup in teh 323gt (non-turbo) will bump up your compression ratio from stock

you can also use bp rods, bpt (Gtx /gtr) rods.. and the mercury capri xr2 (turbo) 91-94 (look similar to gtr rods, built for boost) same as the 323gtx (turbo)

all those rods listed will work in the b6de (yep, bp rods work in b6de/ze) no modifications needed, plug and play

Well guys, the car's going into the shop today and we'll see what the verdict is! Thanks for all the help, it's greatly appreciated! I've decided to stick with the B6D but get it rebuilt to make sure the internals will be able to keep up with the turbo! I'll keep everyone updated!

Thanks again!! :D
