fitting a new door.

Post by BOy2K »

heya guys

how hard is it to fit a new door to my mx3?
i recently had someone scrape the side of my car with a lorry.. :(
and it looks like getting a 2nd hand door is the cheapest option
so i was wondering if its fittable myself?

you'll need 2 people, 1 to hold the door while you attach it then you just tweak it, to get the fitting right. eh will take you about 30 mins or so

2 people, one works the bolts, one holds the door (like Brian said). However, you should mark the door hinges before you take the first door off so that the second door should go in about the same place. Get the second door in the same place and shut it, then if it is off usea floor jack at the end of the door to hold it up. It is easier to loosen the hinge bolts, jack the jack up a tad and retighten than it is for someone to hold the door for 30 mintes off an on while you fiddle with it. USE a second person. This is not a one person job even with the jack. If you mess up one hinge bolt b/c the door was not straight you will be really sorry.

http://www.uk-mx3.com//forum/viewtopic. ... light=door

theres the link I had to do it to my car!

Tools you will need

Hammer
Philps screw driver
size 8 spanner or vice grips
about 3 or 4 pillows

Step one (REMOVING YOUR DOOR CARD)

1.
using your screw driver unscrew the 4 screws holding the door card in place
A. one at the door opener/ locking mount
B. one in the handle
C. under the arm rest there is a small removable square you will see
D. one at the end of the door which faves out

2.
Pull on the door car steadely as the pins POP out of the frame

Step two (unhooking all wires) if ur only replacing the door only do step 3
1. sepperate the elc. window and central locking wires (wide white box)
2. seperate the elc. window (smaller white box)
3. unhook main connection by opening the door and pulling back the black covering and unhooking the wire boxes

Step three (removing the door)
1. to make the job easier on yourself and to prevent damage to the door first remove the opening limiter.which is the small sliding metal bar half way up the inside of the door between both hindges. A thin metal bad holds this in place so using your hammer lightly knock it out.
2. using your size 8 spanner/ vice grips remove the door from the hindges
(try to hold the door at the normal angle and dont let it drop as you remove the nuts as you dont want to damage your door sill)

Step four (replacing the door card)
1. place the door card in the usual position and then replace the 4 removed screws
2. bang around the edges as to push the mounts into place

Step five (reconnecting all wires) if ur only replacing the door only do step 3
1. sepperate the elc. window and central locking wires (wide white box)
2. seperate the elc. window (smaller white box)
3. unhook main connection by opening the door and pulling back the black covering and unhooking the wire boxes

Step six (replacing the door)
1.place your pillows about halt lenght of the door to
a. hold the door at the correct height
b. prevent the new door from being scratched
2. first mount your bottom nut to the hinges
3 mount your top mounts
4. reaffix the door opening limiter

step seven (dry run)
1. make sure you have fastened all your nuts to the door correctly as if you have not the door will not close properly
2. gentely close the door over till you feel it press agains the locking hoop on the inside of the door well
3. push the door till it closes
4. open agan and try closing the door at normal speed

OPTIONAL!!!!!!
(door dose not close properly)

if the door is hanging a bit low and is slightly catching off the locking hoop
try tightening the nuts again up on the top hinge
Vice versa if it is too high

if all nits are tight and the door is still catching try adjusting the door locking hoop with a hammer
my lightly tapping it in the needed direction
I advise only if it is needed to be moved about 1/8 of an ince either way
