Which motor for a 96 GS -> 2.5l swap?

I just purchased a 96 MX3 GS with a dead cylinder. I want to swap in a 2.5l but i have been advised the 96 is obd2 and im going to have issues getting the 2.5l (not ze) to work due to wiring.

My question is how accurate is this? im sure there is an obd2 car i can pull the motor, ecu and vaf out of for the swap.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for this info?

PS: i only got 2 weeks to find everything, do the swap and have it legal and on the road so time is of the essence.

After some more research it look like i found the following:

I can buy a KLDE from a obd2 626 and use that ecu and that vaf to swap it into my 96 mx3. Does anyone have proof of this?

Acutally has anyone with a obd2 mx3 have a klde swap i can clone that works?

Well i mamaged to get a new klze curve neck from tigerjapanese.

Got it installed and running!

Using all OBDII wiring, ecu, vaf. Using all origional sensors that came on the new klze (assume dto be OBDI).

I managed to hook up the egr as well!


I have a cel but not sure what its from yet, the car had a cel when i bought it and there is a weird sensor/solenoid blocked off on the firewall as well.

If you have a CEL on, did you try pulling the codes?

MX-3 w/ curved neck millenia klde, boosted @ 5 psi. /bov and wastegate are good!/ nitto drag radial/ gutted interior/ millenia red top injectors, vortech fmu/aem wideband/ all bolts ons/ Car put together 100% by me. Mechanic? who needs a mechanic? ew.. real men work on their own cars!

Pull the codes for the CEL. Try the KL02 VAF with your setup and see if it runs better than the JE50.

it was my understanding that would not work.


Either way im not sur ehow to pull the codes on an OBDII mx3 yet but ill look into it.


I drove it tonight for the first time and i know one thing. The brand new 1.8l clutch thats in there cant even come close to holding the power if i try to grab a gear.

If i roll into the gas in first or seccond it spins, 3rd is on the verge of killing the clutch again but it holds.

i havent even reved it past 4.5k yet!

Well here is the story from last night....


Start the car. let it idle 10 minutes, rad hose blows...Ok fixed that.

Start it again, idle 10 minutes, it is in diag mode now. Attempt to time the motor. Rad cap SPLITS in half blowing coolent across the garage.

Ok put on the k8 cap. start car, cant time it, water jet from blown rad cap damaged the timing lite. however while no i diag mode it was showing 10-12 degree timing so ill leave it for now.

So i take the car out onto the road for the first drive!





Sart to gently pull away.....ease onto gas in first...tire spin LOL
Car has some serious pull, however stock clutch is done. it wasnt very old but will not hold the power at all, i only gave the car 1/2 maybe 5/8 throttle and reved to 4.5k and it was pulling liek mad!



BUT I STILL DONT KNOW WHAT THAT DAMM SENSOR IS FOR ON MY FIREWALL!!!!

im working on it, not easy to get a camera behind the intake manifold on a klze.

it does say mitsu, has 1 vacuum line on it, ka87 i believe
