Gas Smell everytime i open my door...

Hey guys,

Almost every time i get out of my 93 4 cyc sohc, I smell gas. I was sniffin around and i noticed some of the smell coming from my muffler. I had originally thought there may have been a leak in my gas lines but i check them and they seemed to be ok. I was thinking that maybe my engine is not burning all the gas or something. Well anyways i thought someone with a vast amount of knowledge here might know the answer. Thanks in advanced!

Check your fuel lines al the way to your engine, smell could be carrying back, also you can remove your back seat and check the seals and lines on the tip of the gas tank.

If it smells like fresh gas and your not blowing smoke, it probably is

put a piece of cardboard under where you think it might be leaking and then see if any puddles appear. also, do you smell it in the car or outside of the car? possible fpr leaking?

after ive been driving for a bit, ill open my drivers side door and ill immediately smell fresh gas. It almost smelled like it was originating somewhere near the rear drivers side wheel vicinity.

do you notice any leaks? thats where the fuel tank is and thats not coincidental.

Well, lets take a easy approach to this. What is near the rear drivers side wheel that could leak a gas smell? I would say the gas cap, they have a seal that goes bad over time and if it is bad they will let gas fumes out. Repalce the gas cap and I bet your smell goes away

My old escort used to do this. It was a pinhole leak in the fuel line right under the drivers seat. It would leak as long as the fuel pump was running. But never heavy since it was the low pressure return line.

My parents Mazda truck had this same problem....but that time it was the seal on the top of the tank. Where the sender units goes. Then it was sloshing up and leaking out. Then draining down the fuel line to almost under the cab.

Talk about a remote problem that was tough to diagnose

I have the exact same problem with my 94 DOHC 1.6. I can't notice it unless the car has been running for 5-10 minutes, and it's worse after high-RPM driving (makes sense, higher pressure in the line). For me it smells like it's coming from an area directly below the driver's seat on the bottom of the car.

The leak must be microscopic -- I haven't ever seen a puddle, none of the fuel lines are ever wet, and I still get the proper number of kms from a tank.

Anyone take a guess at how much it would cost to get the fuel line replaced?

Not much. Get one from a junk yard. If you want you can hook up a pressure guage on one end and fill the other with air and a valve. Pump it up to a few PSI (not much or you'll blow it out), close the valve, then let it sit. If the pressure drops, it is leaking, spray some soap water all over it to find the leak. I really wouldn't bother fixing a leak though. I would get another line. A poor fix could mean a leak later and perhaps a fire.
A small leak in a gas line will be almost impossible to find. The gas will evaporate quickly enough that it will not leave much of a wet spot if any at all. The heat from the car will make it evaporate more quickly and the fact that you smell it sais it is evaporating.
If you do not want to test a used one you can build your own, but I wouldn't recommend it since adding the ends is difficult. A leak could mean a fire. Getting new ones from Mazda is probably the safest option, but likely pretty costly.
