Stock SOHC MX-3 1.6L... Should I turbo? Plz help

Post by NickIreson »

Hey guys, I have a stock MX-3 SOHC, it's slower than Rick James's reflexes.... Im sick of it.

Im thinking of slapping a turbo and intercooler setup on it until I can save up for a BPT swap. I have access to a T3 turbo for dirt cheap, free actually, in new condidion. Would it be worth doing? What boost can I push? Will the motor last? And will the gains be worth the hassle?
Thanks alot.

Dont waste your time with that sohc. Get a BP or a BPT. Its a waste of energy to touch that sohc, unless its to remove it. :P

i actually heard somewhere that turbos were better for sohc's and supers were better for twin cams...maybe he should try and turbo the sohc, you know just cuz everyone has a bp/bpt

yeah they aint cheap the exhaust mani has to be fab'd and then you gutta buy obviously all the stuff you will need, like have a downpipe fab'd and hopefully youll intercool it in wich case have dimensions taken down for that. figure out where you gutta tap in the oil feed line. derrrrr im captain obvious.

It really makes no sense to turbo a SOHC, you are starting with only 88hp as a base with a SOHC engine, by the time you are boosted and say pushing 7psi, you are about the same HP or less as a BP engine (130/135hp).

Also everything has to be fabricated including the turbo manifold, it isnt like the DOHC motor where you start with 105hp and you can use a GTX turbo manifold as is.

Take the money and drop in a BP engine and I am certain you will be a lot more happy, you can then boost the BP engine at a later date if you wish.
