I can get my hands on a zetec dohc engine with atx, harness and ecu for a low price and i am seriously thinking about this swap. (I am a bit tired of the BP swap i did already because - the engine started burning oil out of the blue). From my search i know that the zetec engine itself would bolt on mechanically.

I need to know if the auto tranny also is bolt on (mechanically).
I am confident of being able to handle the wiring problem once i know everything else will bolt up.
If only i had access to machine shops and such and had some metal working skills i wouldnt be so worried about mechanical fittings...
Also any other thoughts/advice on this swap is welcome.... Its still only in the pre-planning stage...

The ZETEC has to be from a ZX2 or a 2WD Tribute and not a Focus Couger/ Contour as the block casting are different to accept a Mazda tranny. If you are looking that the ZETEC look for a early 98' ZX2 as these are a bit of a production freak Bigger fuel rail, injectors, the stock cams are more aggressive than most "stage 2" and some "stage 3" aftermarket cams for the focus heads. and different gearing than any of the other Mazda G series trannies except for the one for the RF engines. As the '98 ZX2 ZETEC has the same casting number and many of the same P/N# as the 2001+ SVTFocus. Bolting up the tranny side shouldn't be a problem as it looks to be all Mazda and besides that there are getting to be more and more Escort and BG Protege guys doing this swap to the point where there is a company in PA offering a swap harness kit. The Ford MTX-75 and cable shifter can also be swapped but you run into the problem of the speedo drive in digital on these trannies where all the Mazda, escort and ZX2 is analog and a bit of fabrication requiring cutting out the chassis mounts and shifter from a Focus and grafting them to your car.

I looked at jayco website http://jaycoautomotive.com/ - they dont list any kits for the swap. Maybe i have to call them and ask for it.

Make sure you swap over all the ODB2 wiring as well. Plugging in a SCT flash programmer can do things with this engine that you can only wish you can do with a BP or KL. There is a night an day difference between the stock and SCT flashed ecu tuning. The difference is like going from a B6 SOHC to a B5ZE or BPDE or K8 to a KLDE but with the same engine. Nothing like the old reprogrammed EEPROM from Superchip, BBR or Starchips for the MX-3 & 6 in the past where you thought to yourself "well maybe I feel a difference ". In addition the SCT tuning in the Ford EEC works with bolt-ons not against them. Besided that you can datalog how the engine is responding to modifications and to a certain degree there is some user adjustability throught the hand unit. The only real down side to the ZETEC is that most of the aftermarket parts manufactures has started to drop there ZETEC parts from their catalogs as of this year.

I would say that this is really that new The French Canadian guys that can't even read or write in english have been doing this since at least 2001 that I know of. This is mostly because there is no one to tell them on forums like this it can't be done.
