car problems help!

Post by izzy2206 »

I have a 94 mx-3 1.6L dohc and just had the head machined and the valves seales replaced. Also had all the top end gaskets replaced and the distributer assemble w/wires. Got all that done and reset the timming and it is running weird. It smokes at start up and it smells like it is running rich and when i go to take off it acts like it is goin to fall on its face. Does anybody no what it could be im bout to drive this car into a lake.

i just did all the same work to my head as well same engine... it feels sluggish on take off as did mine what you should do is go to the distributor and LOOSEN not remove the 2 14 millimeter bolts holding the distributor to the head and turn the distributor clockwise...do this with the engine running... you should here the cars idle increase a little and if you check the tach it should be just under 1000 rpm thats where mine is. tighten the bolts and take it for a drive, if its better then leave it if its not try adjusting it a little more.

your throttle response should be a little quicker and if you run a higher octane gas your results should improve even more.

try this out and let me know how it goes

advance

Well if it is in fact runinng rich, which you said it was, turn your disty until its advanced as far as it will go, run premo gas at all times and listen for "loose change" under the hood, which is known as detonation. If you hear this or even think that you hear it your timing is advanced too far, which I highly doubt you will. Just turn the disty back a little at a time until it goes away. I dont know what engine you have but I had a bp in which I think the stock timing is 14 deg. I cut the rest of the notch out of the disty so I could advance it further, then I advanced to 26 deg at idle with no problems.
