Need Instr. to set 90-94 bp timing

Post by OROutdoors »

So I went to the online 95 service manual, read about the coil, distributor and setting timing. I noted that the 95 DOHC 1.6 has many differences from my 93 SOHC 1.6 -- the 95's coil is integrated into the distributor. It seems my 93 has a separate coil (and, man, it's small). I note the distributor is otherwise different too. This leads me to believe that the instructions on setting timing on the 95 is different from the 93. I read the Hayes manual, and it was of no help (no surprise to many of you).

I assume there is a mark on the flywheel or such that indicates Top Dead Center for piston1 (though I'm not sure how to determine if piston is TDC for compression or exhaust strokes). I assume that the rotor is centered on cylinder1 sparkplug wire terminal when piston1 is TDC on compression. From there, I'm guessing a timing light and adjusting the position of the disty will finish the task.

But, what I really need is instructions on setting the timing after replacing a disty on a 1.8 SOHC bp. If anyone can describe the marks on the flywheel and the manner of aligning the distributor, I would greatly appreciate it. The online manual here seems to be for the DOHC only.

The procedure for the B6 and BP SOHC is exactly the same in the factory manuals.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you are saying -- are you saying that the procedure for the B6 SOHC and the BP SOHC are the same? That much I knew.

Or are you saying the procedure for the DOHC is the same as for the SOHC?

The online manual on mx-3.com is for DOHC (as far as I can tell), so I'm needing SOHC instructions.

you don't have to follow any procedures.....set your cams on the comp stroke that it will tell you in your manual then just set cyl 1 to TDC pop your belt on and your set

Well he's not replacing a timing belt...

OROutoors, take the disty off the cyl head. Pay attention to the way the disty is aligned to the camshaft. You can see it once you pull it away from the cyl head. You don't have to find TDC for the #1 cyl to do this. If you get it wrong putting the disty back on and it's 180 deg out, it won't run at all. Just take it back off and rotate the disty from the back 180. Once on, let the car warm up to operating temp with the cooling fan not running. Jump the 10 and GRD in the diagnostic box near the firewall. Get your timing light and adjust the disty back or forward untill you have factory specs. I believe it's 10 BTDC.
